So, I was stopped and questioned by a Police Officer while Hunting Boletes Today.

I was riding my bicycle around, checking some of my favorite spots, one of which happens to be a police station surrounded by dozens of beautiful old oaks. After finding nothing but one small, lonely bolete, I continued on my bike ride.

Shortly thereafter, I nearly jumped out of my skin upon hearing the yelp of a police car! Not five feet behind me was a cruiser, lights flashing, officer behind the wheel pointing me to the curb.

I pulled my bike over and dismounted, keeping my hands at my side.

OFFICER: How are you today?
ME: Fine!
OFFICER: The reason why I pulled you over is because you don't have a horn on your bike. Do you have identification on you?
ME: {hand him drivers license}.
OFFICER: Where are you coming from?
ME: Biking home from work in {town to the south}.
OFFICER: Where do you live?
ME: {town to the north}
OFFICER: Why were you circling back on {road}? That doesn't lead to your home.
ME: I was looking for mushrooms!
OFFICER: {looks quizzically at me} What kind of mushrooms?
ME: Edible mushrooms! They grow under oaks.. and there's a lot of oaks around that police station!
OFFICER: True!
ME: But be careful! Don't think that you can wander out there, pick some mushrooms, and eat them. You have to know what you're doing. Do you want to see one?
ME: {Unzips side pocket on backpack backpack and pull out a nice, meaty, blue-staining bolete}. This is called a bolete. You see the spongy underside? That's good--if it has gills, they're far more dangerous.
ME: (Reach into pocket, about to take out my Swiss Army knife to demonstrate how this bolete bruises blue).
OFFICER: Keep your hands out of your pockets.
ME: (Remove hand from pocket. Reconsider, and ultimately abandon, the whole take-out-a-knife-and-demonstrate-cool-blue-staining-of-bolete-to-officer idea).
OFFICER: Do you have any warrants out for your arrest?
ME: No. Clean record. Never even a moving violation.
OFFICER: Wait here for a moment.
ME: (Sit down on the curb and wait).
OFFICER: (Goes back to car, presumably runs my license)

5 MINUTES LATER:

OFFICER: Ok. You're good to go. We've had a lot of thefts in the area from people on bikes, so we're checking riders. Get a horn--even something small.
OFFICER: (Hands me back my ID)
ME: Thank you sir... by the way, is it OK if I continue to collect mushrooms around the police station?
OFFICER: Go crazy man. This is all public property (waves arm and points around).
ME: Thank you sir!
ME: Continues on my way.

He got pulled over on a vehicle.

He kinda has to answer his questions, at least a little bit.

Standing there silent won't get you far, especially since he had no reason to fear the officer.

I've tested so many darn boletes this way, I pull the knife out and scratch them in one motion. I had absolutely no intention of threatening him; regardless, the stupidity of that move didn't hit me until he told me to keep my hands out of my pockets.

Meh.. why be difficult? I don't hunt actives, and "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar" as they say. Since the cop was actually pretty nice to me, I'm actually thinking of donating $20 to their PBA. They have my name and ID on file now anyway, and I tour through that neighborhood every two days.

True, but it's not the officer's business what he was doing there.

No crime was witnessed, and no plain sight laws were violated.

He actually could have stood there and said nothing. All he had to really do was hand over his ID. Just some advice for anybody that is approached by an officer...

Cop was doing his job. No reason to give him a hard time if you're innocent.

And that cooperation thing is good to practice- I got stopped recently for expired tags (my fault, 100%) and the cop was super nice because I super nice.
We smiled and chatted and shook hands when we were done.

The punchline? I had half a pound of shrooms on my passenger seat the whole time.

I had a similar incident recently with a conservation officer.
When they question you like that I think they are judging you to see if you seem guilty or not. If you plead the fifth they know you have something to hide. They will remember you as a bad egg.

Yes, but they still can't violate your rights. I'm not advocating being a huge prick to the officer, show respect, but also show that he can't have your rights.

I remember those wheel-driven mini generators that pressed against the sidewall of the bicycle tire. Then the light on the front would light up... I wonder how much more improved that design is?
