Drunk with the odour of blossoms - A selection from Nietzsche... quick read...
    #11058061 -

Quote:
Drunk with the odour of blossoms. - The ship of mankind has, one believes, a deeper and deeper draught the more heavily it is laden; one believes that the more profoundly a man thinks, the more tenderly he feels, the more highly he rates himself, the greater the distance grows between him and the other animals - the more he appears as the genius among animals - the closer he will get to the true nature of the world and to a knowledge of it: this he does in fact do through science, but he thinks he does so even more through his arts and religions. These are, to be sure, a blossom of the world, but they are certainly not closer to the roots of the world than the stem is: they provide us with no better understanding of the nature of things at all, although almost everyone believes they do. It is error that has made mankind so profound, tender, inventive as to produce such a flower as the arts and religions. Pure knowldge would have been incapable of it. Anyone who unveiled to us the nature of the world would produce for all of us the most unpleasant disappointment. It is not the world as thing in itself, it is the world as idea (as error) that is so full of significance, profound, marvelous, and bearing in its womb all happiness and unhappiness. This consequence leads to a philosophy of logical world-denial: which can, however, be united with a practical world affirmation just as easily as with its opposite.

This selection (#30) comes from his Human, All Too Human and I think it is probably key to eye it under the pretty hefty human psychological and sociological examination which this book (and damn near all of his works) takes.

I am wondering about the last few sentences and how to interpret them... What exactly is this consequence? Which can as he says be united with a practical world affirmation just as easy as the inverse... what do you think he is saying???

I really like this aphorism anyway.

Discuss! :sun:

The consequence is the realization of the world not truly being "...full of significance, profound, marvelous and bearing in it womb all happiness and unhappiness," of an error being the cause of man's tenderness, profundity and inventiveness, as the arts and religions portray and incite it. A philosophy of logical world-denial can still be held while living ones life, which is the practical world affirmation, and the opposite that is the ending one's life or the refusal to partake in life.

I'm not very familiar with Nietzsche's writings, but he seems to be beginning to play with the idea of nihilism, its causes, and methods of dealing with it.

Well that's my take on it.

Yeah, fair enough. Nietzsche often seems to like to comment on both sides of many issues. While there may be an error when compared to pure knowledge - one really must respect what those so called errors have produced for humanity (and were they not necessary discharges given the times) and we cannot really shake them (imo).

And really should we ever really desire that? Yes refine but to want to extinguish is almost a fanaticism or maybe even impossible. Just maybe clearly defining them I guess.

You just convinced me to read like, everything Nietzsche ever wrote. I absolutely love finding out that some philosopher has already eloquently explained some inkling of my own. Best method I've yet discovered for figuring out what my inklings actually mean.

And who's to say that the attainment of "pure knowledge," which I assume is truth, would be an "unpleasant disappointment?"

It couldn't possibly teach us anything which isn't essentially obvious.

Can we make this into a Nietzsche discussion thread?

This is from The Will to Power, "Religions are destroyed by belief in morality. The Christian moral God is not tenable: hence "atheism"-as if there could be no other kind of god. Similarly, culture is destroyed by our belief in morality. For when one discovers the necessary conditions out of which it alone can grow, one no longer wants it (Buddhism)."

Thoughts?

Inasmuch as it could ever be considered as human as the above I think we would find it quite alienating and cold, no?

However I think these emotional abilities to register the cold magnitude of existence already are possible within in us, it just depends on the individual to awaken them; and they are quite empty. What more could the future hold in store for us!? How would we actually evolve beyond what has already be commented on. History of thought is LONG. And there is nothing really warm and human about being unless you trick yourself (project). Maybe the only human thing left to do would be to pride oneself for striving; fair enough.

Disappointing knowledge - if things can already do so to you probably, I don't think much will change for us. I mean do the advancements in the loftiest realms of physics really change your outlook on life? Maybe the nerdy smiles of those participating in its development are as far as that knowledge gets to emotionally impact people. Unless they make a show of it. But then again we would like a demonstration, and I think the 21st century has been fruitful in solidifying a legitimacy to the secular outlook. But there are certain human homages to be remembered!

The sights of our sentimentality can be set in a variety of ways I guess. But I do see the progress in the sciences as virtuous.

For some of us.

Breaking the bonds of the dream of culture is so dangerous an undertaking that only youthfull folly starts us on that road; looking for solutions and gifts that will never materilize. By that time it's, IME, impossible to turn around. Then one finds oneself alone and adrift in a slightly psychedelic state in the sense that everthing seems chaotic or on the verge of chaos. All powered by the knowledge that whatever we were striving for was never on the table.
