Yeah have you considered potato flakes rather than fresh potato? I use potato flakes for food in my agar.

really! is there a certain brand you use or what ever works. Also what is ur measurement you use and any other ingredients u mix in? R u using MS in ur liquid or a piece from the center of a cap? This sound like a project i gotta try

Right.

So, it is done.

What I did was:
-shred the potato
-added Gypsum to Potato shreds
-put in oven, min. heat, door open for a couple hours to dry

I wish my camera transfer was working; what I got was VERY interesting. Stringy, flexable, tight little shreds.

I added it to my straw etc. and pasturized.

All the Potato strings held together perfectly, no mush.  It is mixed with my spawn and incubating now.  I have pics, looks great, just unable to upload.  Hopefully soon.  Cross your fingers for colonization.

my first thought as i started reading the tread was instant dried potatos... i feel that there is going to be a high risk for contaminations the way that you did it, we'll see obviously, but that's my guess. the idea about boiling potatos then using the broth is a decent idea also... if that is, the fruit yeild/health/growth benefits even prove to be worth the added effort, time, money, and contam risks... good ideas though, i hope it works out. thinking outside the box is what helps us learn

Yes, certainly just a whim on a left over jar.

To tell if it even makes it to fruit is all this may tell.

If so, I am going to prep more potato to try next time around.

Also, consider reduced potato broth with some weak coffee to soak grains... perhaps?

Coffee soaked grains ruled IME.

cool. glad its working for you! im trying many different things right now as well. learning what works. im a hands on learner so... coolest thing im observing is that stropharia will eat almost ANYTHING. given the right conditions, which are pretty basic.

its like these things WANT to grow for us...

I'm curious myself... On the "broth" I would definatly use coffee also. I have used coffee in most of my batches since the first time i used it. And back then i did several experiments to see if it was even worth the added few bucks. It seems to help in almost everyway. I get fewer contams, i get faster colonization times, quicker fruiting times, and larger flushes... from what i can tell. Of course it's been quite some time since i've done a batch without coffee, so who knows maybe i'm just getting a little better and coffee has nothing to do with it, but i'll keep using it. Anywyas, i want to hear more about potatos...

WOW!

So far this is doing AWESOME.  No sign of contam or other trouble. 99% colonized. Ready to fruit soon.

Again, I have pics, but the camera USB will not connect on my Laptop.

Anyone know any tricks to get a Sony DSC-S750 recognized through the USB?

This sound like a very nice substrate! Can't wait to see the fruit. But still there is no other way to REALY know how good the sub is than working with isolate and test the same strain on the same substrate exept the potato. Im Realy wondering HOW this can be good!

Anyway , 5 shrooms for you dude. Nice Experiment.:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Agreed...

This was done because I had a left over jar that needed to be dealt with and a potato.

Most likely novelty results.

Guess...  I'll find the uncut diamonds.

I'll let the pro's cut em and find the worth.
