Quote:
NEW YORK -- The chase is now complete. With another hit on Friday, Derek Jeter recorded the 2,722nd hit of his career, shouldering past Lou Gehrig for the most in franchise history.

"You feel fortunate to be at that place," Jeter said earlier Friday. "We have had a lot of players in this organization that were well respected throughout the years. I don't want to say one person is more respected than another, but I'd probably say [Gehrig] is as high on that list as you can get. To have the opportunity to share a record with him, it makes you feel good."

And to have an opportunity to break that record most certainly makes him feel better.

Entering this homestand, Jeter stood three hits short of Gehrig's record, prompting a deluge of attention from both fans and media. And after beginning the homestand in an 0-for-12 funk, the pressure only increased.

Jeter finally tied Gehrig's record on Wednesday evening, lacing a single down Yankee Stadium's right-field line against the Rays. Twice he doffed his helmet to the home crowd, which offered him a lengthy standing ovation as the Rays applauded from the visiting dugout.

Afterward, Jeter spoke of his new perch alongside some of baseball's greatest hitters.

"You look at all the great players that have played in this organization throughout the years," he said. "To say that you have more hits than them or at least tied for the most hits in the history of the organization is definitely hard to believe. It means a lot."

No Yankees player has ever recorded 3,000 hits -- though at 35 years old and presumably with at least five more seasons ahead of him, Jeter has a fine chance to reach that hallowed mark. In 14 full big league seasons, he has never played in fewer than 119 games or recorded fewer than 156 hits. Six times he has recorded at least 200 hits, an achievement he is almost certain to reach again this season.

Jeter also ranks fifth in Yankees history with a .315 career batting average, third in games played (2,119), first in at-bats (8,589), second in stolen bases (300) and fourth in runs scored (1,564) and doubles (437).

Among active players, Jeter now ranks second in hits behind Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Mariners. He is 53rd overall, roughly 1,500 hits behind all-time leader Pete Rose (4,256).

If you're a baseball fan it's pretty fucking impressive to see an active player surpass Lou Gehrig in hits. Derek Jeter now is the sole occupant of the 53rd all time hits record. With three more hits he'll move to #52, surpassing Roberto Alomar.  9 hits after that he moves to #51. Four more and he is top 50. All TIME. By season's end, with Griffey batting .214 on the year, Jeter may even surpass him as the active player with the most hits, and Griffey is sure to retire this year.

That means Derek Jeter, next season, is essentially a lock to be the active hits leader in all of Major League Baseball.

But if you can't put aside your feelings for a team or even a specific player to appreciate that, I can't help you. You're lost.

Next on the active hits leader lists?  Ivan Rodriguez with 2702, Gary Sheffield with 2689.  Those careers aren't lasting much longer. Jeter has at least four more years of baseball ahead of him, and is far healthier than either of those two. Next after them? Julio Franco - who will never do anything but pinch hit ever again.

(And by the by, next in line after Jeter, I-Rod, Sheff, and Franco?  Alex Rodriguez with 2512.)

Franco hasn't retired? He's over fifty now, I believe. Jeter probably can only play passable shortstop defense for another year, two max (I think). I'm thinking he'll get to 3,500 hits, but not 4,000.

If he finished with 3500 hits he'd be sixth all time. All time!

I despise the Yankees, but I don't know how anyone can not help but like Jeter. He's been a superb player, a great leader, and nothing but a class act on and off the field.

It's easy to act like I don't like him.
I don't have a problem with him in reality though. I don't necessarily like him, but I hold no negative feelings towards him.

Well you also aren't a Yankees fan.

No offense guys but you have a jaded view of him. I don't think the rest of the country cares about him as much, at least not now, as some people seem to think.

Of course Yankees fans have a jaded view of Jeter. He's homegrown talent who has helped guide this team to four World Series championships. Not to mention he's one of the best players to ever play the game. I'd bet that he will be a top 5 hitter of all time by the end of his career.

Jeter FTW. :ranchydance:

Homer ass shit. Jeter is MAYBE, maybe, a top 50 hitter. And considering the poor quality of his defense, he's probably not a top 75 player. Jeter is massively and completely overrated.
