Baseball is the only good sport
    #13592033 -

Baseball news:
-Jayson Werth to the Nationals for 7 years
-Adrian Gonzalez to Red Sox. Adrian Gonzalez is now a first round fantasy pick. (not mine)
I expect zero replies.

That was inevitable if you ask me. Dunn should have been in the AL five years ago. The Sox paid too much money for a fat DH. The Nationals overpaid as well, but they had to if they wanted to get him.

Sadly, Dunn and Mark Reynolds will not be in the same lineup.

The Nationals are fucking morons.

They make a lot of money off Derek Jeter.  How much are the Nationals going to make off Jason Werth?

Jeter does provide extra value to the Yankees, but not enough to make it even remotely close to a good deal. I'll be very surprised if he is an everyday player in 2012. A-Rod and Jeter will be splitting reps at DH for a billion dollars. Good plan.

Stop drinking this early in the day

If Jeter makes more money for them than they pay him is it a good deal?  I wouldn't be a damn bit surprised if, considering his revenue generation, he isn't essentially free.  He'll play SS next year, probably the year after that and then go to the OF.  A-rod is still an excellent 3B and should stay there for a few more years.

The bottom line, robby, is that they make scads and scads of money off of these two players no matter what they pay them.  Can the Nationals say that about Werth, who has had exactly one decent year by the age of 32?  7 years at $18M per?  Who did they think they were bidding against?

There are no old shortstops or third basemen. There have been virtually zero starting shortstops past 37. Jeter has one more year at short. You think paying him 17 mil to be a singles hitting DH or outfielder is a good idea? Delusional.

They are paying him to generate revenue.  Or didn't you know it was a business?  They'll deal with his skills decline when they have to, which may be soon but I wouldn't cut him yet.  There isn't all that much available at the position, you know.  What they pay him has nothing to do with it.

A-Rod isn't done either and he generates huge revenue, too.  Who's better at 3rd?  Will he have diminished by the end of his deal?  Sure.  Nonetheless they will have still made tons of money off him.

That's what the Yankees do.  If they didn't have the big names their revenue would shrink.  But they do so it doesn't.

Now why don't you fucking tell me how the Nationals are ever going to get any kind of return to justify Werth's deal.  He's a nice player, not young himself, who has just about zero marquee value.  Pay attention to that phrase I used there.  Marquee value.  He has none.  17M for a corner OF who is 32 in May and has had exactly one good, not great season.  I'm just disappointed that the Red Sox aren't paying that money.  It isn't likely that I'll ever have to worry about the Nationals.

Omar Vizquel.

So his 'Jeterness' is worth 30 million dollars by itself? More? Because his play is not going to be very valuable going forward. Paying people just because of who they are is bad business.

Not if "who they are" generates vast amounts of revenue.  Jeter does that.  And he wouldn't anywhere else.  Synchronicity.

Now, you wanna tell me about that Werth signing?  It's worth almost exactly the same annual rate as Jeter's and they will be the same age when it's done.  And just where, exactly, were the Yankees going to get a better SS?  Not available;
Henley Ramirez
Troy Tulowitzki
Elvis Andrus
Jimmy Rollins
Jose Reyes

Not all of them, in my opinion, better than Jeter.  Not now, not in 3 years.

That is probably one of the stupidest things I've ever heard in my entire life.

When did the Yankees get out of the business of winning the World Series, and instead start worrying about how many aging, replacement-level players they can massively overpay for in order to sell tickets?

If the Yankees are anything like the Cubs, and I imagine they are, they make much more money off of their merchandising and media agreements than they do from gate proceeds when people come to the game.  I cannot imagine that people, with the exception of the available female population of New York, are really going to stop watching the Yankees if Jeter isn't there.

The investment in adding or retaining players should be with the aim of making your team better, not more popular.

Jeter is awful defensively, that Gold Glove that he won this year was, by almost anyone's estimation, a travesty.

You and robby make an issue of his salary while I realize that it is completely irrelevant because Jeter is almost free to them.  If you can think of a better SS that is available at almost no cost, or at any cost for that matter, then let's have a fucking name because, like it or not, that is the case with Jeter.  Or didn't you know that increased revenue allows them to pay increased salaries?  I'm going to say it again for the slow:

The cash value of having Jeter on the Yankees almost completely offsets the cost of his contract.  You cannot say that of any other SS.

Merchandise.  Ever heard of it?

Increasing overall revenue allows the team to spend more money on other players.  I'm going to say it again,  Considering all the ancillary revenue they get from Derek Jeter, inc. his contract is almost completely, if not completely, covered.  What other available SS would provide that?

The Gold Glove awards have been a travesty since they were started but I would most certainly not describe Jeter as awful defensively.

Now, for the last time, can either of you dopes name me an available SS that would project better than Jeter for next year.  Forget the other years when he may shift position or whatever, just give me one name for next year.  Not included are:

Tulo
Rollins
Andrus
Henley (a major clank this guy)
Reyes (inconsistent nutcase)

QFT

Rockies picked up Wiggy, he hit like a champion last year considering he was the only oriole to get on base until they dumped their management. Red Sox are gonna beast it at the plate, gotta hope their pitching staff falls apart.

As for Jeter, he had a really terrible season. It's not just that he's getting older, but he was chasing bad pitches like a mad man. Admittedly, when you're not hitting well it makes you more likely to go after bad pitches, but there's nothing more disheartening than seeing a veteren lose his eye.

Also, you chumps are going down next year in the fantasy league :yesnod:
