is latin a useless subject
    #11040262 -

i'm a psych major, NOT planning to go into psychiatry. my uni requires us to take 15 credit hours of a language for any B.S., and i just started this quarter. the logical thing probably would have been to continue my german from high school, but because i did 4 years of it already, the uni wanted to start me in german 301. that class sounded like a lot of work.

so instead of that, i decided to start a new language at the 100 level, so that i could get an "easy" A and boost my gpa... latin was the only class still open when i registered, so i took it.

it's pretty hard though, and everyone i know asks me wtf i was thinking when i took it. is it a waste of time? i can still switch to something like spanish, although i'd be a week behind everyone else.

anyone else take latin? wtf is the point in this language?

fuck the benefits.  i took it through high school and college, and i feel it was a complete waste of time.  i really wish i had spent all that time and effort on a spoken language i could actually use to communicate with.  spanish or german.

latin is the backbone to alot of different languages once you know it, picking up other languages is easy...or so i hear.  i got my 2 years of french out of the way and was done with languages...definitely not my thing

Since it's the root of the romance languages, a common source for many words and phrases in the legal and medical professions, and generally a good exercise in linguistic discipline, it probably isn't a waste of your time. I wish I had taken it...

Ad astra per aspera...

Edit: But, it's probably far from the Easy A you were looking for...

seems like it's only good for linguistics, law majors, or doctors. if i were going into psychiatry that'd be one thing, but...bleh

A facility with language is important for all aspects of communications: speaking, reading, writing, and thinking...

It won't hurt you, at any rate...

It would be kick ass knowledge if you wanted to go to law school.

even then, not really.  i mean, yes, some law terms use latin, but if you're doing law school i really doubt it matters whether you have latin under your belt.  you're going to have to memorize shit tons of vocab anyways.  i doubt it would even make up that significant of a portion of said vocab.

i dunno.  maybe saying it was a complete waste of time is a bit much, because i did come away with a better understand of language structures beyond english.  and i recognize word parts every now and then.  but in general i really feel my time and efforts would have been better spent learning a language i could actually use to communicate.

Yeah, I think so too. I've had six years of latin and it does help a bit with scientific names of fungi, but not too much. Most of the terminology in most of the fields is really pretty advanced latin vocab in any case.

Who said that? What does that mean? And how do I know that's really what that means?

I took four years of latin in high school

you have no idea how many obscure english words and words in other languages I can decipher simpky because of Latin.

I urge you to take it, OP.

Knowing Latin makes you smarter/look smarter, plain and simple.

Now if you'd have learned classical Greek instead of Latin, then you wouldn't have mixed up the two
