Buying a new mp3 player

So I've filled my 8 GB card on my old phone and I'm now looking to upgrade to an mp3 player with better storage, but hopefully similar features.  Also, I was hoping to keep all my CDs at home for backup only and solely use my mp3 player for music in the car.  From what I see, the ipod would be perfect for this use because there are many head units that accept USB input and have ipod controllers inside; enabling you to select songs and see song info right from the head unit.  But to me, that looks like the end of the benefits of an ipod.  Otherwise, it seems overpriced.  You don't get a camera, wireless syncing or internet capabilities, or an internal speaker for listening to music without headphones (I'm looking at the ipod classic, btw... there's no way i'm spending the amount of money they want for an ipod touch).  So why is it that a Zune, which appears to have more features, is similarly priced?  Unfortunatly, if I buy anything but an ipod, I loose the ability to connect to my car audio (not counting the aux in, which kinda sucks).  So does anyone have advice on which road I should take here for my new media player?

I know a lot of people dislike Ipods, but I've tried nearly everything and Ipod is by far my favorite.

I've had quite a few MP3 players, an iPod is probably your best bet. I would just advise that you avoid iTunes at all costs, you can use winamp to put music on your iPod. I got an 80gb iPod (a lot of space) for about $250 almost a year ago, surely its cheaper now.

Well it may be the "best", but honestly why is that? Winamp lets you simply select and drag them over. I don't really see what more you could do with the process. That and winamp has an AWESOME visualizer :mushroom2:

Video, but I use my music player to listen to music :shrug:

I think iPod BY FAR has the best interface.

I don't see how anyone could not like an ipod. Have a 80gig classic and couldn't really imagine life without one now. No problems with it after a year and a half. I want a touch so bad though those things are sick and you can browse the web on them.

I laugh when people say "ipods sound like poo"

yeah, if you have a stable headphone amp, and ipod, and some insane speakers, you'll notice that they don't sound as good as a cowon with fully set up EQ, but with an ipod and some earbuds, they sound exactly the same as the cowon.

SanDisk's Sansa Fuse 8GB w/ 16GB micro SD card capacity.

Love it. It's cheap. Accessories are also inexpensive. Very durable. Holds a charge very well. Charges as you load songs onto it etc. I listen to mine all the time while I'm driving and I've only had to charge it once. Glad that I don't have to screw around charging it when I'm swapping music in and out.

The only downside is that if you pirate music, you'll have to use mp3tag to rename all of it if you give a shit. Otherwise, the songs ripped from your CDs will automatically sync with windows media player, get dropped in your Music folder, and be tagged and ready to go with the Sansa (even if filenames are Audiotrack01 etc).

As easy as dragging and dropping mp3s into its folder, too. You can keep your "main jams" on the 8gb internal, and throw your interchangeable stuff into the 8 or 16gb card. "Play all" can do either the internal, external, or both. For whatever reason, if you're going to use a cassette adapter, everything from rap-classical-metal-jam sounds better on the "Jazz" equalizer.

It's supposed to be the easiest for a start and you don't have to wipe your ipod when your changing shit around and whatnot. You can pluck bits and pieces back and forth.

I've owned the H10 and the Clix... way better then iPod and for the same price. The only thing I don't like is they don't sell them in stores anymore so you have to buy them online.

I'll probably be going with the ipod just for the simple fact that it has a high level of compatibility with car audio systems.  It's unfortunate that it comes down to the ipod's vice grip over the market... or perhaps it's popularity... or perhaps it is Microsoft's refusal to cooperate with other electronics companies?

Also, all the other mp3 players ppl have been mentioning are just too small.  If I'm upgrading, I want to go for over 32 GB so I don't have to worry about space for a long time.  Anybody ever use the Archos 5?  It still doesn't have the compatibility with car audio systems, but tons of features and a better price than ipod touch.
