Two smaller 50/50+ PE casings (Pics updated as of 9/14/09)

Well, I've moved on from the obsolete coir/verm mix and am now trying out a true casing. I'll keep you guys posted.

coir can be cased. you spawn to coir and add a casing layer. what are you talking about?

Alright, the 50/50+ casings have been in the FC for a couple days. Humidity is up, I've been fanning and misting. Light is all good.



I've already patched once, should I do it again? I dunno if that would make sense. Learn meh :P

So is this project grains with a casing layer on it?  no bulk substrate? 

Just patch once before the first flush....after you harvest your trays you can "patch" the areas where you picked the fruits to if you want. ~P~

Yup, straight rye PE substrate cased with 50/50+. Shotgun terrarium, a misting every day or so, and 2-3 fans a day.

These pictures were taken 5 minutes ago, +35 hours from the first picture taken. The camera flash is very bright so it makes the mycelium look really thick. Also, the dimmer areas just popped up and I expect them to fill in just a tiny tiny bit. I don't think overlay will be a problem. Fanning and misting multiple times a day. When they went in the FC the temp was brought down from ~84F to ~76F. The only potential problem was I was just a day late introducing to fruiting conditions. The only expansion of mycelium that I've seen is from the areas in which it had not poked through (Don't foresee any colonizing or overlay issues). I expect knots to appear very soon.

P.S. I'm still a newbie so please please give me some constructive criticism!

P.P.S. I keep forgetting to mention that its multispore, so the growth won't be that consistent, even if I patch, which I did.

Little over a day later:




It's filled in as expected, rather rhizomorphic, knotting has jussssst started. Fan multiple times a day, mist when needed. Once again, the camera makes it look brighter/thicker than it really is.

Next pics will be uploaded when pinset comes in.


Edit:  P.S. All future grows will be done in a martha. Stay tuned for an upcoming official grow log (my very first from start to finish) featuring the Costa Rican print I received from the very very generous infea :P

As a matter of fact, I don't think it is really anymore difficult than cakes. If you're using cakes, you can just crumble them up and throw a 1/4-1/2 inch layer of the casing mix on top and just mist and fan and you're golden. Works the same way with grains :P The only way that it makes it any harder is the fact that you have to pasteurize a mix of ingredients. I don't think this should even be considered much of a hassle since making the cakes in the first place requires mixing up verm and brf and sterilizing the mix. So the procedures of mixing and getting the correct moisture content (whether it be for substrate or casing mix) should be down pat already. Also, everybody who is anybody these days will dunk and roll their cakes anyways, which, in essence, is the same as casing. I say go for casing! The benefits outweigh the extra work (what little extra there is.)

Okay, pinning took longer than expected, but hey what can you do...

Pictures as promised.

This was taken just now. It is the first flush off the pinset, I think I'll harvest it in two days.



This next one is of the same amount of substrate, but it came from a syringe, and the dimensions of the container were changed, so the depth is less than the first one. I wanted to experiment, so I deviated from the optimum dimensions of 5.5 x 5.5 inches for one quart of substrate. As expected, it turned out much crappier.




The following picture is of the first casing I did. It was the coir/verm obsolete one that I think people saw pictures of. Well, it was spent, so I took the whole thing, crumbled it up and left it out in the rain for a couple hours. I then added a new layer of coir and let it colonize that. It is dry as shit right now, and I only kept it because it didn't contam. I'm just curious to see what it can do after all the abuse haha. I might even throw on a thin thin layer of late 50/50 casing when/if it pins. You can clearly see the sides pulled away, but I'm just going to let it do its thing.



Check this out on the side of the same casing. I thought it was interesting haha.



P.S. The whole setup seems to be on the drier side. It's not too too dry so I'm not very worried about it yet. I'll remedy the climate on my next run. For now, I'm content with what I've got.

P.P.S. I can see why multispore can become annoying. Inconsistent.

Some things I plan to fix next run:

1. I will perfect humidity
2. Add even more FAE
3. Strain Isolation (Multispore is O.K. not great)
4. Work more on triggering even and dense pinset
5. Maybe go bulk and get some bigger shrooms.
