use of the word 'infinite' on discovery/ history channel documentaries

If that was the case then the whole universe would have been instantly sucked into it the moment it came into existence. Right? It may be very very very fucking dense, but it ain't infinitely dense, so why do people who are real physicists use this bullshit language?

Infinitely small doesn't mean non-existent.

You can infinitely approach a number.

Yea infinitely small just approaches zero, never reaches it.

As for infinitely big, um not too sure about that. I know in physics there is a calculation to measure the mass of the black hole so i assume the center can only have less mass than the entire thing soooooo yea I guess if they say that you can call them dumb.

infinitely small sounds stupid to me even though i get what yall are saying but however small it was it was only that small, infinitely small doesn't have any real meaning, at least not to my (perhaps infinitely small) brain

You could be right, I don't know enough about black holes to accurately say... But -truly- infinitely dense sounds really unlikely to me.

whoops sorry i am a little high, infinitely dense is what I meant though. You can measure the mass of blackholes similar to mass of planets by how much they move objects around them. I forgot the exact equation but it exists. So yea, same idea I would think, can't have the center of something weigh more than the entire thing.

The mass is not infinite, but it is so massive that the gravity field it makes is strong enough to pull light into itself, creating a "black hole"

The more mass, the bigger the gravity well.  If the shit was infinitely massive, there would be an infinitely massive gravity well (which would suck)

Au contraire.  The theory that predicts black holes actually do predict them to infinitely dense.  That, I believe, is actually in the definition of a black hole.  Because it is so (infinitely) dense, the gravity well it creates literally rips a hole in space time.

I know it's hard to put your mind around, and it is definitely counter-intuitive.  Even physicists have a hard time with this one, but if black holes do exist (and we are nearly 100% certain they do), they are infinitely dense!

I wish I could tell you more, I really don't understand a lot about them.  I'd say you need to ask a real astrophysicist, but I think they have a hard time understanding too :grin:

Right, basically...
Antimatter and matter created near the event horizon don't cancel each other out.

Instead, the negative particles are sucked in and the positive particles escape...
The black hole needs to compromise this "energy created out of nothing" by converting mass into energy (E = mc2)... Thus it shrinks and eventually evaporates completely instead of infinitely expanding and sucking up the universe.

At least - that is my current understanding of it.

The issue is a disconnect between the mathematical meaning of infinite and the layman meaning of infinite.  Most people think of infinite as a quantity, which is incorrect from a mathematical viewpoint.
