I hear ya. Ive been using win 7 so Im starting to like it. I was thinking also about duel booting with some version of linux

Ever seen DamnSmallLinux? Fits on a floppy

Yeah, ran it on my xbox1 just for the fuck of it...lol

Check out arch linux if you want to, its the distro that i use on 2/3 of my home computers...on mine and my daughters...my wife has a mac though.  Oddly enough, i ran windows 7 on my daughters computer for a while, but we were having problems with it always dropping her internet connection, and she connects with a wireless WMP54g card, so nothing uncommon.  But after an hour or two of being on, it would drop connection, and never come back up, i couldn't for the life of me fix the damn thing.  I tried the chipset manufactureres drivers, old and new linksys drivers, etc...just couldn't get it to work.  I chalked it up to beta windows, as it worked fine in windows xp.  Now however, its running archlinux, and doesn't have any problems whatsoever...and she is much happier with it now too...

if i wanted firefox i would just type

pacman -Sy firefox

into a root console, and bam, i have firefox.  If i wanted lets say pidgin to chat with

pacman -Sy pidgin

easy as pie...

As far as getting the dual boot setup, all you need is an extra partition to install whatever linux distro you go with, then install grub to the MBR of your booting hdd, and when you boot up, it will load the grub menu and you can pick which OS you want to load, this normally also comes with the install of whatever distro you are using.

Linux users amuse me with their "simple" commands :rolleyes:

Fact is in real life you'll run into troubles ranging from finding the right package name, dependency hell, or having to compile from source because there is no package available (like for the above mentioned apha version of firefox).

depending on your distro, it may have been built by someone in a community repository...if not, then download the tarball of source code, and compile it yourself, a very good skill to know IMO, is how to compile your own software...even gives you a chance to dig through the code and make sure there is nothing shady in there...

They are quite simple when you get used to them, i would even venture to say a lot of things are easier in linux that windows....but certainly not all.

I live in real life, and while i've had problems finding the right package before, I always seem to come out with something free that does the job wonderfully, and i can change it if i like.  Dependency hell is fortunately something I have not really had much of a problem with, sure, there are small problems here and there, but nothing i couldn't easily get around.

And lastly, compiling from source...is really not that big of deal, especially not as big as your making it out to be...you know, somebody did compile that .exe used for the install on windows, probably someone who works for mozilla, but it could be anyone, who knows what they fuck they put int hre with it, and what else it installs, all you get to see is your .exe file, oh, and its against the law to reverse engineer it too, so be sure not to do that, they dont' want you to know whats in there.

2. going to http://www.mozilla.org/developer/
3. clicking on the link for http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.7a1pre.en-US.win32.installer.exe
4. and then double-clicking the downloaded exe file?

Linux has its strengths, but I don't think installing software is one of them. Ideally, you shouldn't need a package manager at all.

Maybe you should need a package manager, and no executables at all?  Most executable installers that rely on other software do the same thing a package manager does anyways, checks to see if you already have it, if so, good, if not, then install it, then continue installing your program.

My only question would be, how do you know exactly what that .exe file is installing?  how can you guarantee there aren't unwanted programs bundled in with it, or hidden programs that get installed and you never see or know they are there?  I would rather have to compile a bit of software, then blindly install every piece of my system personally.

If you dont' want to use it man, then by all means don't.  If you don't like it, then by all means, continue disliking it.
