It looks like some kind of quartz, but it's hard to tell without more fully formed crystals. If it can scratch glass, it's almost definitely quartz.

Poke around on wikipedia and learn the vocabulary to describe crystal geometry.  Then it's easy to look them up.

I don't think it's a garnet.

It's hard to tell from that picture, but you usually see garnet with a dodecahedron crystal shape.

But really, it's impossible for anyone to tell.
