1st grow

and i wanted to know, do i leave the tinfoil on the lids when they are colonizing or just let them sit with the micopore or masking tape?
EDIT: now i have another question, has anyone had success using 12 oz jars rather than 8 oz cooking without a PC?

get rid of the foil and use micro pore tape(paper tape) not masking tape.

micropore tape over injection site.  If you want to get real high tek, you can put a coffee filter over the lid.  Although micropore is all i use.

thats too thick. its called paper tape. you will find it in the pharmacy.

Too thick? I mean I guess for optimal gas exchange, but I've used it before and it worked...

Either take eveything off or cover the holes with micropore tape, found in pharmacies and drugstores (it is used for wound dressing) and manufactured by 3M. It is a trademarked product and well known so if you ask for it by name the person behind the counter will know exactly what you want.

It will work because even a totally covered jar will work sometimes but it is far from optimal.

I also used cloth tape in my first grows and the jars tended to stall. Once I peeled off the tape growth speeded right up.

I'd prefer not using anything, as long as I had the dry verm, than cloth tape now.

are you using brf or a grain style jar?

I think that with the brf you will just slow down your colonization time and not really help yourself out as much as you would with just doing more smaller jars. with the bigger jars try WBS.

I've heard the smaller the jar the better for brf cakes. 450mL (1 pint) jars seem to be the standard for this method though, and I have heard very little about failures and disappointments that way. Good luck with your grow, update throughout if you can.

Sorry but you are wrong. Half pint are the standard for brf cakes. All of the teks you read mention 1/2 pints.

For the OP.

Full pints will work but cause more problems. If you can get hold of half pints easily do so and use your pints for other things (liquid cultures, etc)

they arent pints (16oz) they are 12oz. i only did 3 so ill let you know how it goes.
ANOTHER Q: after i inoculate the jars, do i put another piece of tape over the holes or just leave it with the needle hole in it?
