Help a Cactus Noober

Well it's been a while since I've been on here. I primarily was a poster on the fungus side of this board. However my interests have really changed. I found a girl and am looking more into stabilizing my life out a bit with a 'safer' project :smile:.

Well I recently was introduced to Trichocereus Bridgesii from a friend. Let's put it this way, :heart::heart::heart:.

Anyways I plan on starting from seed, I have some pretty basic questions I hope you experts/enthusiasts can share the answers.

I'm looking for a good species that grows fairly fast, so no lophora or whatever. I'm looking towards the Trichocereus but I'm not exactly sure on the differences between Peruvianus, Bridgesii, or Pachanoi. I know their all Columnar or whatever, but beyond that I'm a nub.

1. I live in a fairly cold climate, so I was considering doing an indoor grow. Would I need lights? I hear they help things grow faster but I am very patient, and wouldn't mind waiting a couple years to have a meter tall fellow.

2. I don't wanna sound dumb but do cacti have roots? Do they not appreciate being around other cacti? I kind of want to 'cheap out' and just use a rubber maid container with maybe 4-5 cactii inside of it with the same soil/sand mix. Is that a no, no, I hear their kind of prone to contamination?

3. How many seeds am I going to need to plant for one cactus? Sure all the web-sites say their viable but even when I plant some peppers from home depot I get some duds haha. EDIT woops just read the rules can't ask for cactus seed source.

4. Is it better to start from seed for simplicity, or pray for a viable cutting? Or can you not even grow from a cutting, haha. Also where do the seeds come from if I wanted to grow more after my first grow?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this, it really does mean a lot to me. If I get these questions answered you better believe I'll have a clean and nicely put together grow-log and share any tips/tricks I may pick up along the way.

Most differences between those 3 are anecdotal and skaky at best, but from what everyone seems to agree on, I'll say this:

-bridgesii is the least water tolerant and most prone to rot.
-peruvianus has the most mixed genetics (most do to some extent) and getting a real one can be tough; shady vendors mislabel them as barely active cuzcos, etc.
-I've never been let down by san pedro.
-of the 3, bridgesii tend to be the most consistent. Some claim that peruvianus can be more potent, but that's only if you hit the genetic lottery. Bridgesii will not let you down mescaline wise.

Of course they have roots. You could cheap out with the container, but you'd be better off isolating each one, especially if you have different ones with different watering needs or are worried about rot spreading from one to the others.

Your soil mix idea will work if it is course sand. The fine sand like the kind used for playgrounds will not work. I'd recommend 50/50 potting soil + perlite for an easy failsafe cacti soil, or something more advanced like 1-1-1 gravel + perlite + cactus mix.

I'll send you a few via PM. All seeds I get tend to have very high germination rates.

Of course you can grow from a cutting. If you're looking to grow faster, a cutting will be infinitely faster; seeds are extremely slow unless you graft them. If you're looking to grow many many cacti though and are a patient guy, starting from seed could be cool.

Wow thanks so much for such a fast reply.

I'll look into the indoor growing myself, I'm sure it's been done before. My grandmother used to have some cacti sitting in-front of her patio door. Her's most likely weren't active, but you never know haha.

Where do you live? The sun is always best. Even with direct sunlight in the best conditions, trichocereus only grow about 1-1.5 feet per year, so you'd be waiting a couple years for a meter long cactus anyway.
You can grow them outside for the summer months and then allow them to go dormant for the winter. When the spring rolls over, they'll have a nice growth spurt.

If that's not possible, you need some sort of lighting. A decent amount of HPS would be my recommendation, but unless you have a couple of hundred to spend and enough room for all the stuff, your indoor grow won't be as healthy. When cacti don't get enough light, they etiolate.(get very thin) While in insufficient light, they are more prone to getting sick.

That aside, if it's your only option, getting a few HPS would definitely be a smart move, as CFLs aren't enough for these cacti.


edit: i'd also favor pedro over bridges for an indoor project

You really don't need to worry about getting a viable cutting. Just get one long enough.(6+ inches, recommend 12")
You could throw it in the closet for a couple months and it would still root. Cacti are disgustingly tough.

Urb I understand your laughter lol. I thought about it after and how the hell could they even stand up without roots haha. :uhoh:

I live in the NE(USA), where in the winter it can get down to 0*F pretty easily with snow. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this now that I think about it. I might try anyways.

So the light coming through the windows/patio door probably wouldn't be enough(for the winter)? I know when their little babies you put them in plastic boxes to protect them. But in that stage of growth light probably isn't the most crucial?

Wow so cuttings are tough, eh(not Canadian)? maybe I'll get a 12 inch one and cut it in half and pray for one of them to work out haha. So to reproduce cacti you can just cut them and re-root them? Do you need to use some kind of rooting agent like in clones with MJ?

Pedro sounds like the consensus. Now I just need a good vendor and to figure out these "indoor" kinks in the idea.

Don't expect to get any meter tall cacti from seed for AT LEAST 4-5 years.

Cuttings are easily obtained and very easy, as well as have a faster growth rate.

Some of the benefits of seeds however include:

1. More genetic variations
2. Able to grow more and have more later in life should the hobby stick with you
3. They teach patience
4. They will mean even more to you when they grow up

Trichocereus are decently adjusted to cold temperatures but we need a plant zone (google yours) to be able to determine how suitable they are to your environment.

Indoor columnar cacti tend to disfigure as grow lights are usually unsuitable for them.

You could consider setting up a greenhouse to keep them warm and still give them sun, but if you grow from seed this wont be needed for at least a year or two.

The fact that you mentioned Home Depot says that even you may have access to a pachanoi cutting sooner than you expect, go check out their cacti and succulents selection.

Bridgesii is the way to go, but do not overwater.

Water thoroughly, then let dry all the way, for at least a few days.

I either move mine or cover with glass to protect from the rain, as it can kill them, make 'em drown.

Peruvianus - to find a good clone, immerse yourself in this net culture and find a good clone.  Most or many of them online are the fake shit, so don't start there.

Pachanoi are a dime a dozen, a good bet, and water more water tolerant, although, can exhibit some water damage.

I have had about 5 bridgesii get water damage this summer, but I've been moving them, and missing some rain storms.

Next summer I will build better water protection measures !

Haha, same here, man. Whenever it rains, I have to move my bridgesii or they get pissed off fast. As for the san pedros, I've definitely left them out in rain for 4 days in a row without any problems - actually, they seem to love it. If you're worried about overwatering, pachanois are really forgiving cacti for a beginner.

It sounds to me like a green house is the best bet for this. I don't have one but I am sure I could build a little like 3 foot by 3 foot by 3 foot "green-house" with a space heater just in the winter I'd need to remove the snow from the top to allow the sun to get through and assure that it's leak proof.

I'm willing to wait 4-5 years for a meter tall specimen.

My hardiness zone is 6 according to the FAQ

Just bring it inside during the winter. Cacti go dormant easily so as long as you leave it out when it starts getting cold, you should be able to store them inside without etiolation.

Good call on that blood and ashes because if the bed is raised then the water wouldn't damage the cactus as much.

So if I left it dormant with no real light aside from window light during the winter, it should be alright? If it starts etiolation does that make it "un-nom-able"?

Anyhow, you shouldn't need any light at all, if it is dormant it should not need energy to growing.

I know many people who put theirs in a garage or similar.

I think Doc left them at his office(correct me if I'm wrong mate).

I however, have let nature make them shutdown when it feels like it, so you may want someone who has manually halted their plant's growth to chime in.

I should have my plans all drafted with-in a week or something. I'll let you guys all know what my plans are before I do anything of course. Thanks for all the help. I feel really welcomed and I'm really excited to start a whole new journey.

I'm gonna do some research on how to make cacti go dormant for the winter months, and after that things should go swimmingly.

Instead of building a little green-house for the winter I looked into something called a "cold-frame". It's supposed to pretty much ensure that the plants/cactus stay warmer than the out-door temp by a good amount by reducing wind using insulation and taking advantage of ground temperature.

Seems like a pretty cheap simple solution to my location problem at least for the months from September to December. from December to Spring I'm going to have to keep them indoors or at least it seems that way.

Also I looked into what makes Trich. Cacti go dormant, from what I've read it's a combination of light and water. Anyone know if for sure that's true or not?

You do want to stop watering them as if they are dormant they won't be consuming any.

This means it will be sitting on the roots and making them rot.

Light and temperature are also factors.

Yeah, its just light and water (temps help though) to induce dormancy.

I once had 3 PC pedros that survived over a year as cuttings in a sock drawer. The plants started to consume themselves, starting at the cut end and moving forward...  When they had come back to my possession finally, I had them completely rehydrated and swelling with pups about a month and a half later.  They're very impressive plants.

Edit:  The plants are doin fairly well, by the way.  Their first pups were enlongated and disfigured, but now you'd never guess what they used to look like.

^ Wow. I guess you'd have to be a pretty resiliant kind of life-form to find yourself thriving in such hot and dry climates...But a drawer for a year!? That kind of boosts my morale for this project so thanks for that information, haha.
