Lets identify this cactus

Uare has one that is exactly the same but I haven't pinned down a positive ID yet.

guess what?

i don't know

my original impression when i first picked them up was that they could possibly be a trich species but i am in no way certain of that, infact not even 10% certain lol

i haven't done my homework in this case :smirk:

Im pretty sure its Oreocereus genus, possibly O. Celsianus. Im not overly familiar with them and that ones young, so the species ID may be hard. Im fairly certain its Oreocereus genus however.

Interesting FH suggested that as well. It looks to be about right.

Nice shots.

Let's make this more interesting and add these shots in, they come from one of my trees. Some background, I have been spraying for spider mites on plants in my backyard for a while, I noticed these on the leaves of my tree and I don't know if they are spider mites or not, uare says no but let's give it a go.

yeah, i thought (from the first pic) that they look like eggs of some kind.
mites don't get themselves distributed around evenly like that.
they tend to chill at the top of plants in a little colony and build webs.

The cacti also appear to be of the genus Oreocereus, possibly species Fossulatus, but they appear seed grown. Seed grown plants cant handle full sun, and the hairs grow more dense in full sun. The species ID is again complicated. The hair on Oreocereus genus is only really consistent in the wild.

Those dont look like spider mites, as doc said, theyre too sparse. Appears to be leaf galls, could be due to insects or even fungal attack. The symptoms dont appear to indicate spider mites, theres no yellowing, no damage, no webs (although some spider mites DONT spin webs). Have you tried a fungicide?

-M

Edit: Also possible, and now seeming very likely, is Gall Mites. Theyre invisible and the red spots are caused by the plant itself as some sort of defense mechanism. They like to settle primarily along softwood stems and veins, which fits in this case. They overwinter in bark/crevices. Dormant oil is reccomended.

Well I should say there is some yellowing of older leaves, I sprayed with pyrethrin and neem oil, which I should do again now.

Im pretty convinced at this point its mite galls, the only two controls I know of are, as I said, Dormant Oil. I am also reading now that a mixture of lime and sulfur can also be used. I imagine the application has to be very heavy and thorough, because the bastards are 'inside' the galls.

I dont think the pyrethrin will be very effective, its not listed in my book as an acceptable treatment. Dormant oil is very similar to neem oil, the neem is also apparently a natural pesticide as well though, so its probably better suited. Ohh heres a tidbit, it only says to spray in winter when the plants are dormant and the eggs are overwintering in the bark.

Now im thinking perhaps theyre impervious to any treatment once the galls have formed, as it would offer them protection. You need to drench the plant in neem once it goes dormant, im not so sure if they can be controlled during active growth.

-M

Edit: Upon further research im fairly certain of my two Oreocereus species ID's, the first plant seems pretty clearly a celsianus, the second one doesent appear as a Fossulatus but if you look in your Cacti book on page 120, top left you'll see that O. Fossulatus displays a 'wavy rib' formation very similar to your plant. The hair cannot be taken into account for a positive species ID because it hasnt filled out yet.

Interesting, I wasn't aware galls were so small and rubbed off as easily.
Here is another shot, sorry I can't get it much closer to a clearer shot.

Nor was I, but given the fact that your treatments dont seem to be working and the bumps are exclusively present by the stems and veins I cannot help but to say I'm pretty sure theyre gall mites. I dont imagine you have a low powered microscope do you?

Only a small led mirror lens one, it won't work well to take a photograph though. I'll try to fool around with it and see if I can modify it.

Didn't work, wasn't strong enough of a light source to make the image clear.

I dont want a photo, you should look. If you see bugs it confirms the suspected ID. Just let me know if I was right or not so I'll know in the future in case I ever have the same problem.

The light wasn't strong enough to give me a clear indication of what the bug was, just the same circular shape that appears in the photos, sorry.

Hmm, I dont know then. I've offered all I can, Im browsing pics of gall mites now and am seeing some stuff similar to your photos, but not exactly the same. As I said though, due to the fact theyre only on the veins and stems, it seems definitely like gall mites.

I'll keep looking, but im about to need a nap. Work + hangover + shroomery Id's = tired lol.

Yes, spider mites don't seem to hang out around on stems, enjoy your nap.

Mira eso, estas exactamiente correcto. Tu sabes porque tiennen pelo cuando estan joven? Los otros en me libro no tiennen pelo, pero tiennen muchos anos tamben.

Grant you, you're at a slight geopgraphic advantage hehe. Nice call anyways Felix, I would've never figured that out had you not said it. I was also under the impression that Pilosocereus were only hair forming later in life when they formed a cephalium. Very good call FH, que creas del segundo cactus?
