preserving amanita muscaria pls help
    #10837719 -

Hey guys.. so i found one amanita growing in the forest nearby and now i have it in the oven on the lowest setting the door cracked open as its supposed to be.. but what do i do after drying them ? i mean how do i preserve them for maybe a month or so, not really looking for a longterm preservation method and ive also looked at the methods in the "preserving Mushrooms" section but i have noidea where i can find some desiccants around here so just curious if theres any way to do it without them? also my first time ive found some potent mushrooms so im pretty excited:P

If you're looking to preserve it, chop it julienne style, and pickle it or vacuum seal it. Best methods IMO.

If you're drying it, then once it's dry just put it in an airtight container with a packet of silica beads or something as a desiccant. Actually probably that isn't even necessary, the dry mushrooms by themselves will keep for quite a while (at least several months).  (Also, in my experience, oven-dried amanitas are less pleasant than fan-dried ones... just my 2 cents)

But personally I agree with BigStroonz; it tastes a whole lot better pickled.

The taste. They taste nasty no matter what after drying, but my oven-dried ones taste a good bit worse.  The effects of air-dried versus oven-dried seem to be about the same (there feels like there's some slight difference I can't put my finger on, which could have to do with the fact that exposure to sunlight leads to elevated levels of muscazone)

i know fresh is the best and it seems the older they get the weaker they get. tho i can totally say i have preserved ones and had great luck with them, tho i gota say it all really depends on the year and season each season feels differnt and each years batch feels difference as well as location ones from lush really healthy looking enviroments feel better fo sho

ive seen a few really brightred-coloured ones around here and ill be picking them up possibly tomorrow:P i read from erowid or some place that the most potential ones are those whose caps are flat and which are in the sporinating stage so thats what im going for.. also i tasted a few bits of my dried amanita and i think it was rather good tasting, not delicious though but i could easily chew on them without wanting to spit them out.. kind of a meatymushroomjerky or something:D also i read that the reason to dry them in the oven for an hour in 170-200degrees fahrenheit is to get the ibotenic acid to become muscimol, and after that you can probably dry them anyway you want. Ill just stick to the oven though as its faster.. we've got a mushroomdryer too if thats what you call it but its at our summer cottage right now so cant use that :frown: but i think that will dry them fastest

And I've never read anything indicating that the conversion would actually occur to any appreciable degree under those conditions, and an abundance of anecdotal evidence to the contrary (very often unwittingly from the same people who espouse the oven-drying to convert ibotenic acid to muscimol).

Though I'm still trying to find the full-text of Tsunoda et al 1993 (Change in ibotenic acid and muscimol contents in Amanita muscaria during drying, storing or cooking; Journal of the Food Hygenic Society of Japan 34(2): 153-160) which I hope definitively resolves the question.

i dunno but they are best fresh so the thought of that is a bit backwards in the first place, when it comes down to it tho they said raw ibotenic acid has no effects well what about when its mixed with the other stuff it could probally have a synergetic effect reguardless fresh is better

That's not really true.  Ibotenic acid has virtually the same effects as muscimol, only it's 1/8th the potency... this is presumed to be due to the fact that the body digests 1/8th of the ibotenic acid into muscimol.  So I guess technically ibotenic acid doesn't have any central effects per se, but it's certainly an active compound when consumed by mammals and subjected to mammalian metabolism.

oh totally i was refering to the that PIM tho

"A 20 mg ibotenic acid dose ingested in water tastes like
mushrooms, but produces little immediate action.  Within half
an hour a warm and slightly flushed face was noticed, without
changes in blood pressure or heart rate, with no physic
stimulation, but lassitude followed by sleep.  A day later a
migraine with classical one-sided visual disturbance
developed for the first time in my life.  The occipitally
localized headache continued in a milder form for two
            weeks.

which is proof that amanita smell the way they do cause the drug in them, niffty right.
