Math type people

Because of my miss spent youth ive had to do my HSC exams again. So i have a question. How do you do this?

Simplify:

a2 + 3a +2      a2 + 7a + 12
---------------X  ---------------------
a2 + 5a +6      a2 + 6a + 8

Much appreciated if you can help.

Factor each of the polynomials into a binomial expression.
Terms will cancel.
Multiply remaining binomials into polynomial answer.

easy to remember is foil,
first, outer, inner, last.

Awesome, thanks heaps for that guys. Ive never really studied maths properly before so im going to have study really hard to catch up. Even then i don't know if ill pass or not. But if i fail ive still learned alot and ill just try again.

Instead of just answering, ill try and explain factoring.

You have a quadratic expression of the form A + B + C = 0

A represents your variable squared x^2 in your case
B represents just your variable with a coefficient (a number infront of it) (5x for example) NOTE: with the given question, there is no B term, you can thus deduce that it would be 0x. Your c term is shown as -1, it is always just a number.

So you have x^2 + 0 - 1

seperate your brackets first, beneath on your paper. Theres no coefficient infront of your x so you can start the problem off by placing an x in each bracket

(x +  ?) (x  +  ?)

you are now confronted with finding two number that when multiplied together will result in -1, and when x multiplies with each will = 0.

the 0 is a dead give away in this case, as 1x - 1x = 0, therefore your numbers are -1 and +1.

Check: does 1 multipled by -1 = -1? yes it does :smile:

Solution: (x -1) (x +1)

mathematically, this initial quadratic is known as a difference of squares, it occurs when you have a quadratic of the form

A + B + C = 0 where when simplified the A term has a coefficient of 1, B term is not present and the C term can be square rooted to produce a whole number, it will always appear as negative.

Examples:

x^2 -1
x^2 - 4
x^2 - 16
etc..

The solution to these is always (x + the square root of the c term) (x - the square root of the c term)

The reason for this, if you are interested, is that without a B term, you could solve this quadratic equation without factoring.

x^2 -1 = 0  Add one to each side

x^2 = 1  Square root each side

X = +- 1 Two solutions exist. Square root of 1 is one, and a number, when square rooted always contains a negative and a positive result (+- 1, +- 2, or what have you).

Another example, this one a bit trickier

2x^2 - 32) = 0  Simplify first (ALWAYS do this)

2(x^2 - 16) = 0 Divide each side by two

x^2 - 16 = 0 add 16 to each side

x^2 = 16 square root

x = +- 4

or if you had facotred (x +4) (x - 4).

Finally, this can't be done if your equation was

X^2 + 16 = 0

as this would result in x^2 = -16, and if you were to square root that you would be square rooting a negative number, which can not be done as there is no solution.

Ahh, I loved statistics last semester when I took it. Got a 93%.

The only thing I don't like about statistics is the fact that every homework assignment takes about 3 hours to complete...always gives me neck aches from leaning forward.
