Black widows
    #10814693 -

Have taken over my cactus garden, I've run into two of them today and been very close to being bitten both times. There's webbing all over the bottoms of my pots, I understand this is a sign that they are breeding.

On one hand it's a good thing, they are taking care of any other pests. On the other hand, they're freakin' black fucking widows!

What would you do in this situation?

they aint that bad bro.  their webs are like that not so much because they are breeding as much as thats how they live catch food.  they cruise around on those webs "fishing" for food with their back legs.  if they are large fat black ones, then chances are they are breeding, cause thats what they do when its warm......every one i ever bred had a good 100-300 babies, so they reproduce fast....i would also get at least 4 sacks from one breeding, sometimes up to 8.

lastly, they are VERY hard to get bitten by.  they SUCK off their web, i mean they look really retarded.  their fangs are tiny, and underneath them.  they are setup to stick things with their back legs and bend down and bite and wrap em up.  not like otehr predatory spiders which may be more setup for a human defensive front.  many people can hold them with little troubles, cause as far as they are concerned a hand is just the ground or a rock, they dont go around biting rocks....why do they bite?  to eat, and protect itself.  if you go and squish its underside probably get bit (unless you have super thick skin, might not even get through it all.

anyway, just saying they are no where near as dangerous as people make them out to be.  just put em outside and they probably wont make it back in cause they are slow, lazy and probably found a rock or log jsut as good wherever you threw them.

OR put one in a jar with a couple sticks and watch it, they are fascinating creatures to observe!!!

if you do get bit, jsut get to the hospital....they dont deliver a huge amount of venom, so despite been so toxic, they are rarely deadly.  just go to the hospital and go through their steps, be in pain for a few days and learn your lesson

Yeah I heard something about how they are rarely deadly, I just wanted to be absolutely sure they aren't much of a threat as they are highly feared where I come from and I'm beginning to believe this is somewhat of an infestation, the webs are all over the place. The ones I encountered were small, I have come across a fat one when I was younger and tried to keep it, but you know how parents are about deadly animals as pets. Oddly enough out of all the spiders in the world these actually creep me out the least. That's not to say I wouldn't run around screaming like a little girl if one were on me though, because I totally would.

Definitely black widow, I checked. They are actually out away from my house behind my shed. They were hanging out in between my smaller cacti which are in a crate for mobility, I picked one of my lophs up and I saw the red dots down the back. I then proceeded to piss the spider off with a stick to see it's underbelly and sure enough there was a red hour-glass. The second one I actually touched with my left index finger as I lifted one of my succulent pots. That one I had to kill.

I'm sure to come across more, I will get pictures.

I happened upon a Brown Widow & nest last week at work. Purportedly they are more venomous than the black variety.

I had never seen one until after Hurricane Katrina.  The year after the hurricane both Black & Brown Widows showed up en-masse. I don't know the reason.  Any board or brick , anything in anyones yard (Ms & LA ) was covered with them. It only lasted for about two years then they faded away.  I'm glad , because they creep me out.

brown widows are less medically significant than the black.
also, the red widows (Latrodectus bishopi) are purportedly more dangerous, IF bitten.

Black Widows aren't a huge deal. I generally try to let them live unless they're in my house.

It's extremely unlikely that you'll get bit, and even more unlikely that you'd die from it.

However, when people do get it in a bad way from black widows, it's really bad.  Huge necrotic wounds sometimes followed by bizarre persisting neurological problems.  Phantom pain and the like... My father works with wounds and has seen a number of widow bites, and the problems those patients have even after the wound heals. He's terrified of black widows.  Of course, I think he probably has the bias of only seeing the worst-of-the-worst.

Is it a combo of Nuero & Hemotoxic venoms?  Those are the worse kinds.
The green Rattlesnake has a venom with those properties.

Yeah. Those will make you real sick. I'd get some traps. Perhaps call the pest control place in town. They should give you some good suggestions. You really need to take care of that problem especially if children, pets, or people that are older are around.

Brown Recluses are horrible, I know someone who got the beginnings of gang green from a bite. I would really take care of that. Spiders, spiders, spiders..  :uhoh:

I'm usually not for killing spiders, but it sounds like an infestation... I would just find a spray to kill them... But if you want to go an organic route, maybe safer for your cacti, there are lots of pheromone oils that you can drip around to drive away bugs.  :sanpedro:
