I can't really see adding spores to a substrate as a good thing.  The jury is still out on bone meal as well.

It might be worth an experiment.
There are some organisms that grow synergistically with mushrooms. There's a small but real chance that you've discovered something useful. But just a little tub- don't get crazy.

Agreed about bone meal, and blood meal too. From what I've read they are good for compost, but don't break down quickly enough in bulk substrate to do us or the mushrooms any good. But it's not hurting anything either.

Hey,

Don't add it.  Bonemeal is not a good move, I would suggest that you add coffee grounds or aged poultry litter or vermicast (worm castings) and not bonemeal.

As to the AM ("arbuscular mycorrhiza"; not "ecto mycorrhizal") they are symbiotic to specific host plants.  The AM feed upon the root exudates and in turn offer nutrients, water and protection to the host plants' rhizosphere.  AM does not germinate except in the presence of the host plants root exuades (as far as I have been taught), there is an effort to germinate spores on agar but it's failed so far...

So no, don't bother adding AM at all.  And a big point here is MOST ALL producers of AM (like the one you have with bonemeal) add Trichoderma spp. to the mix!!!!  The creators of most AM products are incredibly stupid because Trichoderma spp. is a parasitic fungi and will parasite most any any microbe fungi it comes into contact with.  The theory is Trichoderma spp. will 'protect' the roots from harmful fungi and they will...BUT...most outdoor soils and nearly all indoor soilless mixes are VERY rarely infected with a harmful fungi.

If Trichoderma spp. is in the same mix as AM spores the Trichoderma spp. will attack the spores and AM fungi so make sure to not buy AM product with Trichoderma spp.

Got any handy references on that?  Our forested area around here is heavily 'contaminated' with Armillaria due to the past sins of the logging companies replanting trees too close together, thinking only of 'board feet of lumber' and not the health of the overall forest.  I'm just wondering out loud if cultured trichoderma could be inoculated on the trees or soil nearby to drive the Armillaria out.

I'm too busy this year, but I plan to harvest samples and submit for DNA testing to determine if I'm living on the world's largest organism.  I suspect the contiguous Armillaria mycelium mat here is larger than the one in eastern Oregon that Paul and I photographed several years ago from my plane.

alwayz made me feel bad when i lived in Oregon to look up on the side of a hill and see half the trees missing.......never felt right seeing all those little treez they planted either, very unnatural looking

I think people probably shit themselves when they decided to culture penicillium. Everything has it's place and it's usefulness even Tric. Although we haven't found one yet I mean there is a fungi that can be made into diesel fuel.

Good idea, maybe that can be a national idea to bring old deadwoods back alive by cleaning out all this dead, infested dirt without moving it or even using f**gicides.
