Watch out for those big capacitors they can shock the shit out of you!  I heard you should discharge them before you work on it.

Other than that I don't know much.  :frown:

Go get a new (used) TV.

You're not going to fix that without extensive knowledge of electronics, a multimeter and preferably an oscilloscope. And if you had any of those you wouldn't be asking here.

Uhhh. I highly doubt he has an oscilloscope. It's a scientific instrument.

My friend tried to repair an old crt monitor that had been sitting unplugged for more than a week. That fucker still put him through a wall.

He has a nasty history of electrocuting himself so it was just another notch on his belt.

I mad the mistake of linking up the terminals on a capacitor for a flash in a disposable camera. I can't imagine the shock from the TV cap. Physics prof said he was fixing one once and he discharged it with his elbow on accident and it threw him about 15 feet. He's a fat dude, like 300lbs.

http://www.repairfaq.org/ is a good start. My guess is that the vertical delection is broken (if it's a CRT).

First thing to do is jiggle the circuit board on the back of the CRT (without power, there are some high voltages on there.)

If that doesn't do it, you'd have to look for a 60HZ sawtooth signal, that drives a power transistor. (this has to be done with the power on, so be very careful 20000V on the tube, and 60-400V on many of the other parts) If the transistor is bust you'd have to replace it. If this still doesn't work you're on your own.

If any of this sounds unfamiliar, don't do it. The inside of a TV is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

Good luck and don't kill yourself.

I used to have an old 13" TV/VCR combo that had the screen collapse in on itself into a single line across the screen.

I just hit the motherfucker on it's side every time it did that. It would always fix the picture.

Agree with koppie.

If you have no experience with high voltage and vacuum tube circuits, don't mess with it. Get another TV and understand why all those TVs are being dumped by your campus mates.

LOL.. That brings back memories of those camera flash capacitors.. I used to work in a photo-mat in high school and had to dissasemble those disposable cameras.  THe first time I did it I laughed at the "warning - high voltage" sticker on it.. Then I touched the cap and BAM..

So from then on, I would charge them up and toss them at my unsuspecting friends who would invariably try and catch them the first couple times.. Bwahahhaha.. BAM!

Edit.

Oh yeah, PS.  Go get a free working one on craigslist. People throw out the old tube ones all day long.

I dint realize tv's were such serious bidness.
