A short indie film directed by someone now working on "Where the Wild Things Are," back when he was an undergraduate. Honestly, I'm willing to call it one of the best pieces of "cinema" I've ever seen. Check it out:

Watched an Amelie trailer on youtube -- looks good! I assume it's available in the US w/ subtitles?

Yeah they sell it here on DVD with subtitles.  It also has an english dub option on the dvd also.  The soundtrack in that movie is fuckin awsome as well.
