Iran captured three americans

"Report: 3 Americans Arrested in IranBy YAHYA BARZANJI, AP
posted:
- The U.S. State Department said Friday it was investigating reports that three American tourists have been detained by Iranians while hiking near Iran's border with the self-ruled Kurdish region in northern Iraq.
Two Kurdish officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information, said the Americans apparently were arrested after entering Iranian territory without permission.
U.S. helicopters were buzzing overhead and many U.S. Humvees had moved into the Kurdish city of Halabja to search for the Americans, said a Kurdish border force official.
According to a security official, a fourth American who stayed behind at a hotel because he was sick said the missing Americans were tourists hiking near Halabja and the border town of Ahmed Awaa.
According to this account, the four had traveled to Turkey, then entered the Kurdish region Tuesday through the Ibrahim Al-Khalil border point in Zakho, the official said. They visited the Kurdish cities of Irbil and Sulaimaniyah on Wednesday. The next day, three of them took a taxi to Ahmed Awaa where they told their companion that they planned to stay at a nearby resort, the official said.
The three contacted their companion on Friday and told him "they had mistakenly entered Iranian territory and that troops surrounded them," the official said, adding "that was the last contact with them."
The mountainous border area is a popular hiking destination and well-known for its thick growth of pistachio trees.
The border force official said Iranian authorities apparently arrested the three Americans because they had entered the neighboring country without permission.
State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the U.S. Embassy "is aware of the report and is investigating. We are using all available means to determine the facts in this case."
Iranian officials made no immediate comment.
The self-ruled Kurdish region has been relatively free of the violence that plagues the rest of Iraq. Foreigners often feel freer to move around without security guards in the area.
Halabja, 150 miles northeast of Baghdad, was the site of a chemical weapons attack ordered by Saddam Hussein in 1988 as part of a scorched-earth campaign to crush a Kurdish rebellion. An estimated 5,600 were killed in the nerve and mustard gas attacks — the vast majority Kurds — and many still suffer the aftereffects."

It's a good thing we have a record of treating people in similar situations well.  Otherwise, those guys might be in trouble.

I can give you a list of Uighers that did nothing more than wander into US-controlled territory, which has led to their never-ending "vacation" at Guantanamo Bay.

I believe they are in Bermuda, and they weren't tourists on a hike.  I look forward to more links.

I can't say there's anything wrong with what went on.  Entry without a visa or through an official government entity will get you detained on pretty much every state on Earth.

The important thing will be to see what happens now.

"TEHRAN, Iran (Aug. 1) — Iran state TV confirmed Saturday that it has detained three Americans who crossed the border from northern Iraq, saying they failed to heed warnings from Iranian guards.
Kurdish officials from northern Iraq said the three — two men and a woman — were tourists who had mistakenly crossed into Iranian territory Friday while hiking in a mountainous area near the resort town of Ahmed Awaa.
"The Iranians said they have arrested them because they entered their land without legal permission," said Qubad Talabani, the Kurdish regional government's envoy to Washington.
Iran's state owned Arabic-language al-Alam TV station cited a "well-informed source" in the Interior Ministry that the three Americans were detained Friday after crossing into Iran's Kurdistan province.
The report said the Americans were arrested after they did not heed warnings from Iranian border guards.
State Department spokesman Robert Wood said Saturday that Washington had asked the Swiss, who represent U.S. interests in Tehran, "to confirm these reports with Iranian authorities and, if true, to seek consular access" to the detained Americans.
The detentions were the latest irritant in relations between Iran and the United States, which have had no diplomatic ties since 1979 when militant students stormed the U.S Embassy in Tehran and took Americans there hostage for 444 days. The two countries also are locked in a bitter dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.
Kurds occupy an area that sprawls across southwestern Turkey, northern Iraq and eastern Iran. The borders are mountainous and not clearly marked, making them popular smuggling routes for centuries.
Iraq's self-ruled Kurdish region has been relatively free of the violence that plagues the rest of Iraq. Foreigners often feel freer to move around without security guards in the area, and it's relatively easy to enter the region from Turkey, particularly by plane. The Kurdish government generally grants visitors visas valid for one week when they arrive at the airport.
The ethnic minority gained autonomy after rising up against Saddam Hussein in 1991, and the region was protected from his forces by a U.S.-British no-fly zone until Saddam's fall after the 2003 U.S. invasion.
The three Americans had traveled with a companion to Turkey, then entered the Kurdish region Tuesday through the border crossing at Zakho, the official said. They visited the Kurdish cities of Irbil and Sulaimaniyah on Wednesday. The next day, three of them took a taxi to Ahmed Awaa, a Kurdish security official said.
The three were last heard from after they contacted a friend saying they had entered Iran by mistake and troops had surrounded them, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information.
The official said the account came from a fourth member of their group who was feeling sick and had stayed behind in Sulaimaniyah.
The Iranian state TV report claimed the four Americans were together when they crossed the border, but "only one returned (to Iraq), while the three were arrested."
The discrepancy could not immediately be reconciled.
The area where the three disappeared is a popular hiking destination known for a picturesque waterfall and rocky scenery as well as a thick growth of fruit and nut trees. The official said it appeared they were hiking above the waterfall when they accidentally crossed the border.
Kurdish officials said U.S. helicopters and Humvees deployed to the nearby city of Halabja to search for the Americans after they were reported missing on Friday but left after it was determined they had been seized by the Iranians.
Halabja, 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad, was the site of a chemical weapons attack ordered by Saddam Hussein in 1988 as part of a scorched-earth campaign to crush a Kurdish rebellion. An estimated 5,600 people were killed in the nerve and mustard gas attacks — the vast majority Kurds — and many still suffer the aftereffects.
In March 2007, Iranian forces captured 15 British service members as they carried out a boarding operation in two inflatable boats launched from the HMS Cornwall.
Iran charged them with being in its territorial waters, and the government televised apologies by some of the captured crew. They were all eventually freed without an apology from Britain, which steadfastly insisted the crew members were taken in Iraqi waters where they were authorized to be."

Two nations with stressed relationships. One picks up some civs who were hiking on the border. There is nothing indicating anything other than this. They were arrested and remain in custody.

Yep, nothing wrong. Really redstorm? It's funny how obscure, bs government regulations are something that must be respected in regards to determining right and wrong, in this situation.

ps. I'm not trying to be as combative as it may seem.

No, it really does make sense.  What do you think would happen if US border patrol picked up an Iranian (or any Middle Eastern) group of individuals?

The fact that we have stressed relationships makes it make even more sense that they were detained. Iran has along history of being undermined by US covert action, so I can imagine why they would be a little suspicious of unauthorized US travelers in their country.

I'm wouldn't say they should continue to hold them by any means, but you would be kidding yourself if you think the US wouldn't do the same thing.

The arrest, I fully understand although it's become an unfortunate legal reality imo. However, to call this situation a case where nothing has been done wrong would pushing it i think. In their situation I would hope that their detention would have been brief and respectful. I will admit to being biased, especially considering Iran's recent shenanigans over border disputes. I'll also admit that if some random Iranian's happened to hike over our border I'd probably be very skeptical of their motivations.

It would just be nice and right if Iran could've handed them over quickly with a "it's too bad this happened, we were just being careful."

"It's no problem. Considering the ongoing conflicts, it's incredibly respectful to have handled the situation as such."

First thing that came to my mind as well was that they were Intelligence personnel.  They must of been planting spy gadgets or something.

Else they really picked a bad vacation spot and were just too dumb to read a map and understand laws.

On the other hand I dont think human beings should be locked away for such a victimless crime.  They should be told not to do it again and released back into Iraq.  Same goes for the illegal immigrants we have such a problem with here in the US.  Not worth imprisoning for a first offense so we should drop them at the border and tell them to go abck to where they came from.  Same for foreigners that may or may not have terrorist affiliations (the ones we cant prove).

Lets hope for a safe return.

So once immersed in the mountainous geography of northern Mesopotamia you're confident that you could hike around for days while trying to experience the region's most beautiful scenery; without penetrating Iranian sovereignty?

These people are eccentric, not dumb. Our state is responsible for about 300,000,000 sapient organisms; if there aren't at least a few whom cause trouble, we're probably living within an artificial reality.

How do you make a tired or weak refugee cross certain borders(ex rio grande)? What about an immigrant who if upon reentering their native land would be executed whether justly or not?
