I know this thread is 10 days old, but I'd like to say that EVERY band has a weird fucking following of people who are absolute FREAKS.

And, I'm sure every person here has been guilty of being that type of fan for a little bit at some point in their lives.

I'll admit I was a bit of an uber fan with Tool for a good year, two years, but I've calmed down now. They're still by far my favorite band because their music grabs me pretty deep a lot of the time.

Tool is just another band, I've heard the same statement for the Beatles, the stones, Pink Floyd, Elvis, zeppelin, nirvana etc. Tool just stands out on their own and has done some original stuff that makes them stand out on their own. Rarely does a band ,that plays or says the same ting as everyone else, get that kind of recognition. If you don'r get it, than you probably wont. There is something special about Tool, it's not Maynard or any other specific thing. Those four dudes together create a spiritual vibration and energy that is unmistakeable to those that groove to same vibration...if you ever see them live you will probably experience it. If not...try something else.

its not tool is "original" that makes them stand out the most. its the fact that they tower in front of almost all the bands at this moment in many aspects. instrumentals, live performance, vocalist, ability to give you and orgasm in your ears(of course very contraversial but ive never experienced such enjoyment from any other songs) Stinkfist is by far the greatest at achieving the toolgasm for me:) its agreed tool is amazing this thread is done

Tool was one of several alternative rock bands which peaked during the mid-90's.
I used to like them, but their music isn't anything mindblowing anymore. :shrug:

radiohead too, their shit is weak.

keep your ear to the ground, there is much better stuff out there that isn't supported by payola.

Yeah, dude, I saw A Scanner Darkly the other day (awesome stoner movie) and I was like "man, Radiohead? why."
They're not terrible, but they are completely overhyped.

FYI A Scanner Darkly's soundtrack is mostly Radiohead.

unless bands aren't super underground or super recognized they tend to dismiss them because they are unable to form their own opinions about them. exploring a band separate from consensus/criticism of others seems to be a tough job for some so go for the sure bet (tool).

I like some of Radioheads stuff but I can totally understand why people wouldn't like it.

Same. I hated 'em at first as an antihype reaction, then I got over it, now I'm essentially apathetic towards them. They have a few good songs, just like any decent popular band.

well i really just got into tool shortly before 10,000 days. and yea i know maybe in a year or 2 i wont be so enlightened by their music as for every other band i have worn out with time. but for now its amazing

agreed

one has to actively look for underground music. going to local shows helps, as do networking sites.
IUMA used to be a fav as was epitonic, now I occaisionally visit archive.org

Eh, I like exploring and finding music I like. Honestly most pop stuff is a waste and a lot of indie stuff sounds like whiny shit to me. I don't pay much attention to hype but I'll usually check out a band that's recommended to me and I've found some of my favorites this way.

radio head is a very groovy and easy to listen to band. its not there fault so many people like them. don't judge a band because of who they attract.

IMO the best music is stuff that isn't cult/underground and isn't huge either. The kind of bands you find through Pandora but never knew existed: like Spacemen 3.

I just agree, these bands are severely overrated, and lack serious progression.
imo, good music isn't played on pop/rock radio stations. it's on college/pirate radio
