Re: Obama to sign an executive order allowing indefinite detentions without a trial! [Re: THC Titan]

Ya I am an Obama supporter and I am not overly happy with a few of his decisions so far.  However, since Obama has not yet signed this order and at this point it is simple speculation I am not pissed off yet.

On the other hand he has only been president for what 4 months so far?  And Bush was able to detain prisoners for 6 years without trial.  And with impunity from this topic board.  I guess I am just glad some of the more hard core conservatives here are becoming more liberal in their stances.  Perhaps just a bit late for my liking.

Wow, second time in one post:
Quote:
Bush is the scapegoat used by most Obama apologists when pressed about the crap that Obama has done.  As long as people continue voting for what they perceive as the lesser of two evils, we the People will continue to be slaves of our government.  It takes a very small number of third party votes to break the chains of the two party system.

LOL I wonder how much longer the American people will allow this man to control this country. I pray for anarchy and an evolution.

More stupid/disingenuous partisan baiting for the resident PAL antagonist...shocker.

A little reading in to the topic would uncover some key facts:

1. this can not be applied to American citizens
2. the detentions are temporary in nature
3. the detentions have to receive preliminary approval from judges
4. a renewal/extension of the detention requires ongoing judicial approval

Given the context of the situation and past actions this is actually a pretty
reasonable step in the right direction.

Obama still sucks, but for other reasons altogether.

Off the cuff, I believe he attempted to apply these types of detentions to
US citizens (Padilla). There was not the same burden of proof to gain judicial
approval for the detention and there was no renewal process either.

I could be and often am wrong, but at the very least there are some reasonable
checks and balances in this particular policy.

Yep, he took people for no reason and held them forever and not only wouldn't seek judicial authorization but actively argued no judge had jursidiction to even hear a case regarding the matter, let alone order a release or a trial.

Though this changed by the end, and he conceded worldwide habeas jurisidiction for US citizens, though likely only cuz he didn't wat his ass handed to him by the supreme court.

Bush was every bit the monster you describe, it just changed with time.  In the end he seemed to wind up to about where Obama is right now.  They're both pretty similar about now regarding these matters, which is pretty crappy for a politician who campaigned on a clean break from bush policies and is increasingly becoming his clone

The depressing part is watching the Obama idiots talk about how Obama is "not that bad" on civil rights and bush is so terrible.  If you like Obama's actions then fine, but to see people try to skate around these glaring problems is just depressing- they'll do anything but vote for someone without a D in front of their name, and anything to rationalzie that decision.

Hi AFOAF, haven't seen you in a while.
