If its in good condition and well taken care of thats a pretty decent price, but you could probably haggle 'em down 50-100 if you wanted though.

No..  I would never buy a full suspension bike with the rear pivot point above the bottom bracket.

Whats the point in having suspension if your legs are still part of the system?

Funny i just ran into this thread. I literally just came back from a day of downhilling. Rented equipment.

Full suspension downhill bikes are the fucking shit, ftw. Like riding a cloud while drifting the rear tire in a grassy turn. Pop's off of little kickers like nothing.

Well that joshua is an URT design (unified rear triangle) which is an ANCIENT and shitty suspension design that was forgotten about in the late 90's.

seriously, y frame - dont even consider it. that bike is a fossil.

That bike was "OK" in its prime, and has a nice component group on it, but for the money there's alot better choices.

Just think about how technology advances in time, and how fast.

That bike is primitive and outdated and wasn't even that great originally.

Gary fisher never really caught up with rest of the mountain bike industry when it really lifted off in the late 90's.

OP - i agree, if that is your pricerange, do get a hardtail with Shimano LX or XT drivetrain (chainrings, cranks, deraileurs, shifters. 27 speed) and a decent newer suspension fork (05 or newer) preferablly rock shox or marazocchi, or fox + light quality name brand wheel set + tires. (sun or mavic)

For $500 bucks, a used full suspension will likely be outdated, and very heavy, at the least.

where as a $500 hardtail could very well be 2 or 3 years old, intermediate race bike with quality components all around, and light.

Riding a hardtail will make you a better rider too!

Santa cruz, divinci, rocky mountain, and boutique builders would get my money...

but your more likely to find a specialized, giant, or trek - which are also good.

Id also look for forks with 2 or 3 adjustments.

+ would go with shimano or avid vee breaks before id get cable actuated disk breaks...

Look for name brand components for the seat, handlebars, seatpost and tires - often bike companies put "in house" components where they can, which are low quality, heavy, weak and crappily designed. Dont be duped.

However - i just looked through the long island craigslist bicycle ads and they are all low end bicycles...

I must be spoiled living in BC - i could go look at 20 highend used mountain bikes at killer prices within a 30 minute drive of here!
