Ways to tell if a diamond is real?

I was out for a smoke in the park a few days ago and found a diamond laying in a crack on the ground.

Its really hard and looks damn convincing. We compared it to my aunts fake, and my grandmothers real one and it looks just like my grandmothers real one.

I know about the scratching glass thing, but they said not to do that because it could just ruin the diamond.

I know I need to take it into a jeweler, but there aren't many around here and its a pretty far bike ride.

If you really want to know, you'll have to swallow it, and see if you poop it back out. A fake one will get digested.......it's the only way.

You can tell some diamonds apart from cubic zirconia by how they sparkle. If you look at a diamond while slowly turning it, you should see a lot of sparkle...with the zirconium this isn't so pronounced.

Diamonds are composed of sp3-hybrid carbon atoms and the crystal grid has a refractive index of 2,14 or 2,4 (I don't really recall but it was high). This means it will split visible light waves very good and thus it will sparkle in the whole spectrum. Real diamonds are very beautiful because of the way they sparkle. Just go to the jeweler and I wish you u the best of luck with your new acquisition :smile:

If you shine a light down on it while holding it with tweezers, does it sparkle and throw out little bands of colored light instead of just what was there before?

And as far as the scratching on glass thing goes, it's not like you need to push hard. Just find a pointy edge on the diamond and rub it against some glass.
