Air/Pellet Gun Enthusiasts! Good Starting Rifle?
    #10449331 -

Hello! I recently applied for a gun license in New Jersey, a state that requires one for air rifles oddly enough, and is due to be approved in the next few weeks. Instead of buying a .22 rifle or shotgun I am opting for a more low-key way to enjoy target shooting on the expansive property behind my home because I go to college and am only home for the summer (not to mention firearm discharge is prohibited in my town :tounge:.

I have been reading review after review about pellet guns and am still undecided. I have been looking at a Crosman G1 Xtreme and the Gamo Big Cat 1200 however am not sure if these are the best options available and don't want to find out after the fact! Basically this to anyone with experience with pellet rifles, what is your recommendation for a reliable and effective beginner gun.

Here is what I am looking for:
- Between 100-200 USD
- Sturdy and Well Built (will not readily break or malfunction)
- Has iron sights (+ scope is a plus)
- single shot rifle
- 1000 fps+

Any Help/Tips Would be Appreciated!

get a real gun you pussy. hell, 22's aren't even real guns.

get a winchester .38 and take it to your nearest rifle range. i guarantee you have one around you. people are going to freak out if they see you plinking around outside with one of those things even if it's just a pellet gun (and air rifle discharge is illegal too in most of suburbia, check your laws).

real guns are more fun, cost the same, and have practical uses..

i cannot buy a .22 as i stated, i will most probably be kicked out of my home. i am going to a shooting range 15 minutes away with my girlfriend's step-dad anyway. i have plenty of space around my house as not to be seen, however i do not have he luxury of making as much noise as i please so for me, a pellet gun is a better option. if you have anything relevant to a discussion about pellet guns feel free to add, otherwise piss off :smirk:

just kidding dude don't worry

i didn't realize you couldn't get a .22, i thought you just that you couldn't fire it around your house. i still think it's a stupid thing to buy (especially if you have parent issues), however...

i would avoid crossman stuff, it's usually cheaply made. some of the major gun brands make decent air rifles. winchester has a few models, but they are in the higher price range.

have you considered getting an airsoft gun instead of a pellet gun? tokyo mauri makes some really high quality ones with the price range and specs that you're talking about, but they look a lot more badass than any pellet gun you can get at a sporting goods shop.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.
All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the
octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV.
But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns.
Also he got a race car.
Is any of this getting through to you?

parents and i can compromise on a pellet gun. i've heard a bunch about crosman's quality or lack there of i think im going to stay away from their guns at this point since i really want reliability. As for airsoft, i already own an m15a4 carbine airsoft rifle which i need to repair .

i'm still looking at the gamo big cat 1200 and now the winchester 1000xs thanks to deity's link

Want an airgun that has high velocity, second to none build quality, and a huge selection? Since I was 9 years old I was brought up on RWS airguns, german made. Check this site out, they have probably one of the largest selections I've seen at good prices.

RWS AIRGUNS

1000 fps .22 calibre's and 1250 fps .177's. Pistols all that. I still shoot the same M34 model in .22 cal I've had for 10 years. No troubles.

I have a Gamo, and I really like it.  It's better than any Crosman I've ever owned.

Ya, crossmans are cheap toys. Not worth the dough in the long run and they kinda suck anyway. Some are good, like the older guns but lack velocity.

The best crossman ever IMOP is the crossman 600 semi-auto .22 cal 10 shot pistol made in the 60's...I still have one .

Never tried out a gamo. I'm not biased againts them because of that but for me, a tried and tested airgun is an RWS or Beeman.

If you got some good money look online for the talon air gun line there charged by air and really preform well. Do some research on them and you will see.

what type of gamo do you own?

and to Psilomind & Oregondopesmoker those guns look great, but are unfortunately too expensive for my needs :frown:

Beeman makes really nice air rifles.  Probably out of your price range though.
