eraserhead being someones "favorite movie"
    #10356324 -

someone just told me that eraserhead was there favorite movie. i think that tells me something about that person, but it isn't what their favorite movie is...to me that says, 'i like to appear strange, unique, and artistic' and that appearing that way to people is very important. i find it incredibly hard to believe that eraserhead can really be someones favorite movie.

it's like saying your favorite album is "melvins - collosus of destiny" which is just an hour of pure noise and feedback with no rhythm or melody. it's interesting and artistic, yeah, but you can't listen to it over and over and over again because there's not much to it.

eraserhead is a very interesting and artistic movie, and it's cool because it started david lynch's career and everything, but how can that really be your favorite movie? it's just so boring and nonsensical and vague. i just don't think that much enjoyment can be derive3d from it for someone to call it their favorite movie. i suppose it's all subjective but i prefer to think it's more of a front where the guys is just trying to come off as some kind of weird misunderstood somewhat melancholy but also very artistic sort of dude.

maybe i'm just reading way too much into this though. i don't know..what do you guys think. does anyone here think it's really possible, or would you really believe someone if they told you eraserhead was their favorite movie.

It is on of my favorite movies. However, my other favorite movies include Gladiator, LOTR, and Star Wars.

I don't like labels.

I've never liked anything I like so other people will think I'm weird or cool or whatever. In fact, I really don't give a fuck.

Mandrake, I just watched Gladiator again. I'm bored now, and about to watch my favorite trip movie: Hitchhiker's Guide, hence my avatar.

I've never seen it, nor do I know anything about its plot.

You're probably being just as pretentious as they are, making a most mocking them for it.

i can see it being in someones list of favorites, but being someones absolute favorite movie i just can't really understand. a favorite movie has to be something you can rewatch over and over. eraserhead is cool and all, but i can't watch it over and over.

That movie was lulzy especially in the beginning when those weird aliens are reciting the awful poetry.

Eh, you're probably right about that. It would be odd for it to really be someones all time favorite movie but who knows.

One of two things is almost certainly true here: your relatively cynical but well-based assessment is true, or Eraserhead is legitimately this person's favorite movie. Hope this helps.

It's my dad's favorite movie.  He isn't strange, unique, or artistic, nor does he intend to appear that way.

well yeah, like i said it's all subjective. i just find it hard to believe so i made this thread to see if anyone else chimed in to claim it as their favorite. i suppose it's not that crazy after all.

favorite
Adjective
most liked
Noun
1. a person or thing regarded with especial preference or liking

Why not?  I wouldn't say "I loved that film" in regards to Eraserhead however i might say that it is one of my favorites.

I enjoy horror films (as opposed to slasher films) and to me Eraserhead is like the archetypal horror or something.  It's as if David Lynch managed to film one of his nightmares. Or one of MY nightmares, or anyones for that matter.  I think he's actually said in interviews that that's where he gets his inspiration from.

I rate it so highly because no other film has managed to make me feel so uncomfortable.  It's got nothing to do with wanting to seem different.

One of my favorite movies is Dee Sniders Stangeland. What does that say about me? lol

I hope he makes another like he was supposed to.

I guess it just comes down to what you measure in considering a favorite movie.  Does it have to  be watchable over and over?  What about it's significance and impact in the film industry?  Who's perspective?  I can see how a badass movie could just be a pain in the ass for someone who made it.  Or how some director's career was changed and no matter if he will admit it's a masterpiece... it may still be his favorite.  I usually like older movies simply for reference.

Why did this person say it was their favorite movie?

I really liked that movie.

I don't know that people who say it's their favorite are trying to appear unique and artistic, but I see where you're coming from.

I know a guy who really is like that. He tries SO hard to be interesting, it's ridiculous.
We're both really into film, so we decided to make a short film for class together one time. The conversation we had about it went like this:

Him: Why don't we cover people in black paint and have them wash clothes in buckets of it in the middle of the junkyard?

Me:Why? That has nothing to do with the plot.

Him: I don't know, I really want to do something weird.

Me: Well why don't we-

Him: Ohhhh! I know! We can do a five minute tracking shot in a field and have people marching around covered in trash!

Me:

Being weird without purpose, just for the sake of being weird, annoys me.

Eraserhead stuck with me for a long time after awhile.  I question David Lynch's true intentions, but I always find his work interesting and filled with hidden things, as a matter of fact- I think Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive are in my top 5 favorite films!! what can I say?  I like weird art that makes me think   honestly- I couldn't give a fuck what anyone thinks :dizope:  I don't find most movies to be that interesting...........

but I do hear what you are saying- I'd imagine that are some pretentious David Lynch fans that want to be as weird as possible-  I found his latest work Inland Empire to seem kinda hokey in a way- a bit too random even for my tastes
