Can two seeds from the same fruit pollinate each other when grown?

Can two seeds that came from the same fruit pollinate each other?

Say plant 1 makes fruit 1.

Seed 1, from plant 1, grows, flowers
Seed 2, from plant 1, grows, flowers

Can they pollinate each other? Would the seeds be viable if yes?

This is what we call plant incest.
Close relatives breeding together.
This is bad for the species, because it can become vulnerable to a certain plague due to lack of genetical difference (richness), so we have these programs against plant incest in the amazon where students collect and trade seeds from distinct places and plant them so you preserve the original richness of DNA as much as possible and can avoid the extinction of many species.

Depends on the species felix.
Many species have a quite limited gene pool already and wont suffer further from inbreeding. Others are so plentiful that a small population that is inbred will not in any way change the survival probabilities of the species.

Inbreeding is a common occurrence in the plant world and is not especially harmful. Self pollination is the most extreme example of this phenomenon and not even that is uncommon.

In many species self pollination or inbreeding is the norm or even preferable to that of out-breeding.

I'm not aware of any either, but to say they'll always be fertile just strikes me as wrong.  Theres always an exception.

I'm just afraid of when I order seeds they'll all be from the same plant.

I suppose I can just order some, then six months later order more.

Lophophora williamsii I'm not worried about, as it is supposed to be a self-pollinator. However when I get more bridgesiis and peruvians it might be a concern.

By the time your seedlings are ready to flower, you'll be so deep in this addiction, you'll have tons of genetics to mix it with..


But if your question is specifically towards trichs, The variance in an F1 trichocereus cross is huge. And they tend to differ depending on which plant mothered the seeds. You should have plenty to play with.
