Growing Kits

Hey guys, just got into mushrooms recently, and I decided I wanted to try growing them.

Unfortunately, I can't run around buying all these supplies and make everything from scratch, so I decided to invest in a kit. I saw a couple of a kits online and saw that most of you posted bad experiences with most of them.

Does anyone here know of a good starter kit that contains everything I'd need to start (or most of it, obviously minus the spores), or a REPUTABLE website to check out?

I would suggest that you just make a list of what you need and go the store and get it. Those grow kits are a rip off and everything you need is easy to obtain.

just looked at that growkit on ebay that DOESNT EVEN INCLUDE SPORES... 120 bucks :eek:
prolly only like 30$ in materials there >.>

i know. 120 is a bit much. but then again he had to go get everything and set it all up and stuff like that and he has to make profit. its cool, this guy seems like he has money to toss around so let him.. atleast someone made this one and its not those little auto dome things a company sells, those are shitty

i just got into growing and i made the mistake of buying a kit, thinking it would be the smart move for a begginer, but when the "kit" came, I reliazed what a huge and overpriced mistake it was.  All of the items that came in the kit i could of gotten at walmart.  Instead of spending 50 bucks i spent 250.  if you really want to start growing take the time to do it right the first time and learn from my mistake.

Yeah I think I'm just going to do some homework, and purchase the items myself. Thanks for the help, that website for the spores, I actually came across before and had it bookmarked, thanks for the second opinion.

I just want to say I was in the same position as you, felt as though I couldn't obtain the items locally easily and that a grow kit had everything you needed and would be fine. Also the fact that you can get it all in one place.

Well, I ended up getting the stuff individually. I had to go to one store and that was it (go figure). I paid $80 for all the materials, then $40 for syringes. That's the cost of a grow kit, without spores.

I have since followed the PF Tek (you can see my grow log in the grow log forum) and have had good success so far. My first pins have already come through, just waiting for the first flush to finish. It was really easy, and I have done pretty good for my first time through so I figure if I can do it anyone can.

That's just my experience anyhow. :smile:

Really though, just get the stuff... the amount of money you will save is insane. The kits are such a rip off

Thanks for the video, really got me going on the right track. Just had some questions that weren't in the videos.

On the last video, towards the bottom it talks about using light to help the mushrooms fully flower. I've read a couple of guides before this, and none of them talked about using any type of light during the flowering process. Just wanted to make sure what the case was regarding light.

Second, it didn't really say anything about drying the mushrooms. Is there any place you know that identifies a good method to use for drying?

Oh and lastly, what strain would you recommend off ralphster's spore website. I'm looking for an easy growing, lush flowering strain, as in produces a lot of flowers per colony.

ThisGuy, I've read your posts, if you want to do a small successful PF Tek grow, here's the best thing you can do:

-Buy 6 or 12 pre-sterilized half pint BRF jars from a reputable online vendor.  They will cost about $40 for 12 jars, or $25 for 6.  For a beginner, this is really a smart move.  You will instantly bypass some of the more challenging parts of the procedure and forever have some half pint jars with good holes in the lids.  The same vendor could also probably supply you with a little extra vermiculite (for rolling your cakes) and perlite (to humidify you FC)

-Buy a spore syringe or two from Ralphsters.  (Any strain he sells is good: Cambodian, Golden Teacher, Ecuador, whatever)

-All that's left to buy is your Rubbermaid tote and some extra accessories if your don't have them around the house:  a mister, fluorescent light, thermometer/hygrometer, etc...

THATS IT

when you have these supplies, all you will need to do is inoculate your jars, let them incubate for a month, and fruit!  For detailed instructions on these steps you will have to refer to some PF Tek guides (and videos) and do a little more researching.  The search function on this site can work wonders.  But I'll quickly answer your latest questions

You want a bright light with a color temperature above 5000k on a 12 hour on / 12 hour off cycle.

Again, using the search function on this site will answer all of your questions.  If you can afford it, buy a Ronco food dehydrator.  Or research other options.

They're basically just selling you 6 pre-sterilized jars and a tote.  The rest of those items are junky.  Also, those are pint jars, you're better off with half pints.

Thanks for the help, but I got another question. I've looked into these electric dehydrators, but other people have told me that using these (heat + fan) dehydrators loses potency. Do you think exposing them to temps between 90-160 (standard electric dehydrator range) would make it less potent? Thanks

Hey ThisGuy,

I would actually not use a dehydrator, and opt for a more natural method using silica gel packs (or silica kitty litter). Basically, you make a small chamber that is air tight, place some desiccant inside (which is what's in silica gel packs), put something on-top of the desiccant like a wire mesh for the mush to sit on, place the mush inside and then close it off and let it do it's thing!

Desiccant is wicked because you will lose either very little or no potency, and they dry quite fast. Desiccant sucks all the moisture out of anything it's in (this is why you find them in shoeboxes all the time), so this is why it works great). I don't know how much you need, but I would imagine not very much. A few packs of silica gel would do you well. Making the chamber would also be very easy.

About Ralphster's Spores, he does indeed sell mostly the kind of mushroom you want, but he also sells other species such as pans and whatnot. You'll want to avoid those as a first timer - maybe when you get into this you'll want to venture into other kinds of psilocybin containing shrooms, or possibly even edible/medicinal. When you click on Spores to list the different kinds, all of the ones listed starting from A Strain to Z Strain (and everything inbetween of course) are all Psilocybe Cubensis. Just go for the one that you think looks cool; Psilocybe Cubensis is the species so growing conditions and all that jazz will be the exact same across all strains you can see there, the only difference is speed in growth (and even then that varies due to multispore syringes), size, potency, and anything genetics-related. It's pretty much impossible to order a strain and also be able to expect what the fruits are going to turn out to be. To put it simply multispore syringes (which is what most of the major vendors sell, either that or spore prints) are a combination of tons of different genetics that are all slightly related to eachother in a way. I have seen flushes using MS syringes where one side of a casing had uniform looking shrooms all growing relatively the same way, then another patch was completely different. It all depends, so just grab what seems to be the best for you.

On a sidenote, if you don't like having inconsistent looking flushes, you can actually clone a mushroom and create flushes of mushrooms that look very much like the one you cloned. Usually other factors carry over like potency, speed of growth, size, etc (as said before anything genetics-related), but as this is genetics we are talking about it can be tricky. Either way though, it works!

That's an old myth and has been debunked. 
For years I built contraptions out of box fans and colanders and chicken wire...  I finally laid down $40 for a dehydrator and it just made things so easy, now I don't know how I ever lived without it.

You should always air dry shrooms first.  Desiccant chambers should be used to squeak that last bit of moisture out.
