A word of caution to The Shroomery - What's really on the internet
    #10261384 -

So I was talking to a member here, and he gave me his email to send him something. From his e-mail, I found his facebook which was already deleted, which then told me where he goes to school. I got the street he lives on, I got his cell phone number, a picture of him, usernames for other social network sites, and much more information.

Shit's out there, and with the internet the way it is today, it's very easy to link different sources together. I easily linked a username on the shroomery to a person on facebook. It's scary, and I showed him what I found and it scared the shit out of him.

What if I was a cop? Or some authority? What if he was doing shady shit with me? He could have gotten himself into quite a bit of trouble. I see it all the time, and I'm guilty of it myself. We say things and tell private information that we don't really think is important at the moment. But it is SO easy to find anything you want about anybody today. Don't believe me? Go to www.pipl.com and search yourself. Employers use this website when hiring new employees.

Just a word of caution because I know we all get a bit lazy and let things go. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for him. I know it was for me, and hopefully for many of you who have said things in the past that maybe you shouldn't have said.

I feel like this should be stickied.

What actually happened was I was going to e-mail him but thought "what if he's a cop?" hed have my email address which could link me to a lot. So I checked him first, figured if I found enough info I'd know what the deal was. When I saw he was a college kid I knew it was OK, but I still found all that.

This is the exact reason I do not belong to any social networking.
It can be odd what one can find on ones self. Every six months I google, and a variety of other search engines to see what turns up.

Up to date, not much of anything comes up one me.
Exception a church I went to years ago, and an old archived journal an ex had that mentioned my name.

The internet can be a scary place. It is best to keep anonymity as much as possible.

Well if people really wanted to find out info on you, they could. I'm sure authorities have a bit mroe sophisticated technology than google.

I really don't care if everyone knows where i live or my name. I don't care if the cops know i post on the shroomery. If they really want to know anything about me, im sure it wouldn't be that hard to find out.

Shit my myspace is in my bio here. Anyone want to know what town i live in? Just go look there. Im sure it could tell you alot about me. Goofer it!

Thank you for your concern tho OP.~

I feel like you are the exception, and most people here wouldn't want all their personal information out there for everyone and anyone to get ahold of.

I don't give a fuck if its stickied, maybe if it was you I IMed on AIM and said "hey does this number look familiar?" and sent your cell phone number then you'd feel a bit different.

i ain't give a fuck, i ain't ashamed of what i do

if the Man wants to come after me i am legitimately prepared to give him a run for his fuckin' money, and if an employer is gonna be shady and go out of their way and try to find an excuse to not hire me, then fuck 'em, their loss.

It used to be you'd actually have to look somebody up in the phonebook.  There, you could find a person's address, and phone number.

You can find my facebook profile (with my picture), but you can't see my profile unless you are a "friend".

What specifically should I be worried about?

Who said anything about being ashamed? And we'll see if youre saying the same thing when cops come knocking on your door and have you on a shit load of charges. And we'll also see if you're saying the same thing when you cant get a job because your retarded ass has shit online that you can't remove. God damn, you probably shouldn't have taken that picture 10 years ago when you were in college.

You guys are just naive, I'm surprised more people don't agree with me here. I'm not saying BE AFRAID or anything, I'm just saying watch what you say or do on the internet cuz it'll bite you in the ass. And ok, so I can't friend you on facebook, but just give me your name and I bet I can find a lot about you.

Good call!

I am usually extremely careful about what I do with my information, but I searched my name and found that my Amazon.com wish list was public! and that is the standard setting, WTF?!?! I changed it to private so nobody could see the books on mushrooms that i wanted :hehehe:

I recommend everyone have 3 email addresses:

1) Primary: use this for friends and family
2) Secondary: use this for website orders and other business. If it you get anything important in here, send it to your primary
3) Business (if applicable): Use this for work related stuff, contacts
3) Ghost: use for porn sites, or anything else you don't want connected to you. use a login that you don;t use anywhere else on the web.

Also, never put your full name as a login or public profile under any site.

I guess my point is that everything you find is public knowledge.

well no shit, the reason you FOUND it is because it's public knowledge, but it doesn't mean it has to be.

Oh, okay.

I was getting the impression that the point of this thread was to point out how much info was out there that you DON'T know about.

well both. there are sites that just do basic searches such as google, but then there are pay sites that employers use, and other techniques that agencies use that are more complex and sophisticated that can dig deeper into the internet. its crazy, I've seen people use them and found CRAZY stuff.

Both security and privacy have always been of great importance to me. It is too easy for some one to track down information about an individual.

Companies are using social networking websites more and more to find all they can about possible candidates. It is a scary world out there and it really seems to be hard to keep yourself out of the limelight.

Lets hope this thread and other topics keep people aware of the internet and how easy it is to lose your privacy.
