a real easy source for some facts and figures would be the PBS special.  http://www.pbs.org/itvs/storewars/stores3.html

yes, it is obviously a biased article, but you cannot ignore the statistics used within.

and yes, they carry a variety of brands; but there are quite a few products that wal-mart directly manufactures or at least overseas the production thereof, which are then given a brand name to disassociate them from being what shoppers consider generic.  it's with such products that wal-mart had the controversies over using outsourced sweatshops.

Fat and handicaped people tend to be poor and broke ...so it`s logical to see more of them at wallmart.

Wallmart has the exact same products as any other store you could possibly shop at,from the same manufactures as the other stores.

It has the exact same suppliers for groceries as the other stores you shop at.

It has the exact same brands of underwear ,tee shirts, lawn mowers ,bird seed ,batteries, light bulbs, dvds, games, ipods, rca cables, televisions, dvd players, refridgerators, guns, bullets, razors, shampoo, deoderant, tampons, condoms, coffe, soap, bycicles, kids toys, tape, shoestrings, shoes, boots, safes, computer desks, rugs, candy, ciggaretts, chips, canned goods, tools, tires as every other store in the US.

So they are shady business people ...arent they all?
So now its they are a bad place to work, dont work there.I can list alot of worse places to work, thats for shure.

I think somebody has been watching too many online docudramas for thier own good.

You are going to have to point out these crazy products you are talking about ,because I see the exact same brands and the exact same shit as all the other stores.

I'm 100% handicaped, but I'm far from being fat...

Hey if PBS is against Wal-Mart, all the more reason for me to support it.  WalMart is good for Americans and good for the Chinese.  Free trade is good for both parties.

yes, with general merchandise a lot of it's the same, but wal-mart tries too hard to broaden its selection.

sporting goods for example.  yes, it has paintball, fishing rods, golf clubs and what have you.  but those that they carry are simply shitty.  they're too big to specialize.  you think a serious golfer gets his clubs from wal-mart?  try finding a paintball gun worth a damn, except maybe the tipmann for recreational woodsball every once in a blue moon.  the same can be seen in electronics, hardware, kitchenware to some extent.  you won't catch an audiophile looking for speakers in walmart, just as you won't find a decent chef buying knives.

basically, i'm just saying that specialization stores have superior products and options, for very obvious reasons.  they focus more time, energy, expertise and space on certain products.  but wal-mart has the allure of always cheap prices, so it drives out the specialization stores and decreases the mean quality of the products available in the area.

You make a good point but there a 'family' store and had a broad selection of items which is still a good thing.

Walmart sells spyder pilot's and spyder vs series of paintball guns which are good markers for noobs.

Nothing beats online though

yeah, a broad selection of items is quite convenient .  the company definitely seems to know what it's doing, considering how thoroughly it has embedded itself in the society.  there's no denying that.

but eh.. it really is painful to watch it spread like a weed, draining the life out of local shops.  i can't shop there because i find it difficult to reconcile the guilt i feel for supporting the beast with the moderately cheaper prices available.  that damn guilty conscience of mine is always getting in the way.

So that means wallmart will not close down the local golf store, culinary supply house, paintball specialty store, audio store.....the more I hear the less wallmart seems to affect anyone.
I can name a thousand other things you cant get all wallmart, which means that they do not affect those businesses either.

I really dont see any grocery stores around here out of business from wallmart,we still have plenty of alternatives to choose from.

I just cant see any of these failing, out of business stores that everyone is talking about.

I have watched all the online documentaries on wallmart too ,but instead of taking those as pure fact I looked around with my own eyes and do not see anything they mentioned as true.

The only thing I can believe is the shady business practices....but like I said ,what business is not shady?

For run-of-the-mill things, Wal-Mart is where its at.  I get a lot of my groceries and supplies from there.  They have the cheapest prices, plain and simple.

When I need a "specialized" and/or "superior" product, I usually go local because for some things, quality is more important.  The money I save at wally world gets pumped back into the local economy in other ways.

okay, products aside, wal-mart seriously is a fucking demon.  do you realize they won't even let their employees consider unionization?  while overpowered unions themselves can certainly be a source of controversy, it doesn't make it any less morally abhorrent for wal-mart to deny its employees the right to assemble in their best interests.

and the everyday low prices are costing americans thousands upon thousands of jobs.  due to its startling power as a retailer, wal-mart can actually sell products for less than the market equilibrium.  it puts extreme pressure on its suppliers to keep costs lower and lower.  this results in massive outsourcing and american job loss.  and those jobs aren't simply on the production room floor.  suppliers have had to cut jobs throughout the company to cut costs in an attempt to stay afloat.

from a business perspective, it really is terrifying how much power wal-mart has.  for suppliers, there is no compromise.  you do it wal-mart's way, or they blacklist you and you're fucked.  it just fucking sucks.

I beg of you to save the American Dream

If you want to save the American dream, you should join the fight to end the Federal Estate tax.

www.nodeathtax.org

-Double taxation
-The super rich avoid it completely (Kennedys paid .07%)
-It kills family businesses & farms who have enough value to surpass the exemption, but typically its all held in land & productive equipment -- so that paying the tax severely damages the business/farms ability to operate & compete.
-Did I mention the obscene rate?  ITs currently 35%, and the Obama administration wants it to go back to at least 45%.

 to the Estate Tax.  to Wal-Mart

It seems to me the best thing to do would be to close the loopholes by which the rich avoid paying it.

I hear ya man.....but,
Should McDonalds employees be union?
Should there be a union for bottle and can collectors,so only licenced union colletors can reach in a trash can?

I am not fond of any unions.

The distributors that deal with wallmart are not forced ,they want the money that contract means and are willing to cut thier own throats to get it,if they all simply did not do business with wall mart ,this would end.
I blame thier greed for wallmarts money for this willingness to be a part of those tactics. If people really want or need that product they will go anywhere that product is sold.

There is money to be made from wallmart ,otherwise the company owners would not let the distributors make the deal.If anything it means less money for the greedy business that made the product and less money for the distributors, after all ,does a company actually need a distributor...no ,but they generate excess business and push products.
Its all about making huge amounts of money ,not the consumer ,if anything wallmart is fighting for the consumer ,thats why they get soo much of a bad rap,if they were fighting for big business profits ,you would hear nothing about it.

All the seedy shit is covered up and kept quiet ,while anything that actually helps people is made to look bad, thats why those PBS shows are funded by companies that want to make things apppear a certain way.......this show was brought to you by ,the project for reaching as for in the consumers pocket as possible or the institute for making people believe what we want them to.

Never mind those companies that do business with wallmart moved all thier factories to Indonesia 10 years before they started doing business with wallmart..........it gets blamed on wallmart, because they are trying to lower costs to the consumer and it digs deep into the pocket of some fat cats 100,000 hunting trip to africa or cuts into his funds for a 250,000 dollar cigarette boat he wants.

Shit like govenors only handing out senate seats to the person willing to kick back the most ,instead of the most qualified or the one that has our best interests in mind...gets swept under the carpet......prime example is the govenor, former, of Illinios ,he threatened to exspose what is really going on to the people after he was caught red handed and they took him down....it got very little media attention and went away.Stuff like that is the norm, his exact words were everyone does it that way,but that shit is briefly or if ever mentioned again.

But there are 5 or 6 different 1 to 2 hour stories on how wallmart is evil.....see how this shit works ,if its good for you its evil,if its bad for you ,you never hear about it.I have personally been a part of and seen some real low down and dirty business practices from major companies ,,far far far worse than anything wallmart has been accused of and its kept quiet ,yet wallmart that brings me the same thing everyone else has for a cheaper price is the devil.............

i completely agree with that.  they're extremely concerned about the consumer, not so much about the american citizen.

the problem for most of the suppliers is that they can't simply refuse to deal with wal-mart.  for many suppliers, to refuse to deal with walmart is a self-induced death sentence because wal-mart is just that fucking big and powerful.  biggest retailer in the world by like 5 fold.  too fucking powerful, too fucking influential, making market freedom a myth.

our job market is in dire straits as is.  the last thing we need is a corporate giant forcing company downsizes and yet more production lines shipped abroad.

simply because outsourcing was done prior to wal-mart becoming the mega retailer it is, does not exempt wal-mart from any blame regarding their undeniable influence on the manufacturing habits of their suppliers.

Well I am glad to see that there are many others that agree with this and to those that don't I am sad because you know not what you do.

For you that support walmart you are supporting a monopoly.  When any business becomes too big and starts controlling the market price and forcing other businesses to lower their prices so much they are operating on a loss.  Wal mart almost put Vlasic Pickles of of business bc they said that unless Vlasic sold their gallon pickle jars for less than they cost to make them and then made them sign a contract assuring that price would stick.  If they did not agree to this contract walmart would pull all the Vlasic pickles and their other products from the shelves.  this is just one example of walmart bullying other businesses even ones big as a national pickle supplier.

this is common practic for walmart.  Seriously do you, that support walmart, not care about the lives that you damage.  Your motivation to shop at walmart seems to be based off of pure greed.  I understand that those of you that shop at walmart for the price bc u think you can not afford to go anywhere else but seriously the produce at walmart is more expensive than the farmers markets.  there are better cheaper healthier ways to live and lessen your carbon footprint and impact on your community.

To those that do not care I am sorry I shed a tear for your community.
