Now before you go getting all smarmy and having a love-fest with yourself, point to one poster here who is not skeptical of something, then we can have a real conversation.

I will be waiting...

Exactly. Everyone is skeptical of something, so it's impossible to draw a line between 'skeptics' and 'believers' unless you define a topic.

Agree or disagree?  This dividing line should be fairly easy to predict among the regulars here.

Wanna show off your smarts here in the forum?  Never offer anything of substance, just bash others' ideas.  :super:

I don't know what the word believer means. It usually is used in attacks on Christians. I believe that more exists than can be scientifically measured. I also believe in toast. So I guess I am a believer.

I have nothing to prove or defend. I see the skeptic as someone who stops their learning at the end of the material world. I know the material world and the immaterial world. Therefore I know more than the skeptic. So I disagree that skeptics are smarter than believers.

Anyone who defines them self as a skeptic is usually spends most of their time making fun of believers. What a legacy to leave on the world. I can see the tombstone, "dedicated forum troll fighting against believing". :rofl2:

A believer is someone who holds something to be true. Truth is what is definite. IMO nothing is definite.

Somethings are pretty close to being definite, depending on how abstract you want to get.

I have to say that I agree with zoudan, you have to define a context to which this discussion is going to take place.

I don't think there's many skeptics of towels, but there are religious skeptics.

Most things to do with spirituality, mysticism or religion are far from definite IMO.

I liked the quote from Michael Shermer. All Rupert Sheldrake's ideas can be explained in other ways. ..... Well, I haven't read his books.

Sure gives you confidence in the skeptic.

True. I am definite in my belief that something is there. I admit I am not definite as to what exactly it is. So I explore.

I'm not a believer, I am an explorer.

Since there are many explorers before me it is only logical to look at their work, evaluate it and compare it to my experiences.

True, yet very few IMO actually make a realistic comparison to their personal experiences. Instead they need to believe and so lie to themselves and then to others. I know this from personal experience. I was once a Christian.:satansmoking:

There's a lot of Western cultural imperialism out there masquerading as skepticism.  People who never for a second think the AMA might be full of shit will dismiss any form of Eastern or indigenous medicine off-hand as being bunk.

This is true. Skeptics can be just as full of shit as any religious folk. We are, remember, taking about human beings.:monkeydance:

And then there is the hippie/shroomery type crowd that will embrace any thing that is 'eastern' or 'indigenous' while being completely skeptical of the AMA and their scientific method.  Thats the kind of skepticism I see passed off as intelligence around here.
