Skepticism
    #10224066 -

This tickled me:

Quote:
We live in a culture that has, for centuries now, cultivated the idea that the skeptical person is always smarter than one who believes. You can almost be as stupid as a cabbage as long as you doubt.

~ Dallas Willard

:rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:

Ain't it the truth, ain't it the truth?

Agree or disagree?  This dividing line should be fairly easy to predict among the regulars here.

Wanna show off your smarts here in the forum?  Never offer anything of substance, just bash others' ideas.  :super:

Yeah, our culture has confused criticism with cynicism.

the doubter has nothing to lose whearas the believer has his belief to defend...

and you may say the believer is stronger... of course if he can defend his beliefs when attacked he may be strong...but what about the guy who offers nothing and has nothing to defend he his strong without proving anything at all...

I don't believe that a skeptical person is always smarter than someone who believes.  However, I do feel that it is better to be skeptical about ideas and beliefs at first, to try and figure out the whole truth or picture, before you go right into believing.

--------------------
And when you loose control, youll reap the harvest that youve sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And its too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down alone
Dragged down by the stone.

once u believe....,,,, u cut yourself off from everything ----that something in any way whatsoever, might contradict your belief... or it is not a true belief...

Now before you go getting all smarmy and having a love-fest with yourself, point to one poster here who is not skeptical of something, then we can have a real conversation.

I will be waiting...

Skeptics have been the ones who've helped me get a handle on something I can believe. A lot gets whittled away, and then you finally come to terms with what it is you believe.

It's a shame that in the end one can be left with belief without the ability to defend it. Outside of a God "experience", it's hard to defend the concept. And even then it can probably be attributed to a high.

Anyhow, I agree with the quote. However, I appreciate skeptics nonetheless, as long as they're not dicks in the process.

I guess it depends on the person's motivation. In some cases I imagine people think that by being rude or blunt they're being more effective. I'd disagree with the approach, but not in the sentiment, if they're trying to help people in some way.

If it's just some kind of ego stroke then it's lame and not all that helpful, and proof of nothing beyond the ability to ask "why?" without caring what the answer is.

I think that if you are skeptic but not intelligent, you just end up confused.

If you are intelligent but not skeptic, then you will have limits on the realm of information you can come to understand (because you commit to assumptions).

Thus in general skeptics can acheive more understanding even if they are less productive.

These factors may be the cause of the 'intelligence/skepticism' illusion

I suppose I am a pyrrhonist. I would be called a zetetic but that word has been hijacked by very strange people. There is a difference between ancient skepticism and the stuff people call skepticism today. Most modern skeptics are really cynics in disguise, they aren't actively interested in discovering truth they are just more interested in trolling others beliefs for their own amusement, usually to boost their ego because they do hold beliefs but they will never put them on the line. Don't take me wrong, there is nothing wrong with some good clean trolling now and then. But these people are pathologically bent on being assholes all the time, they are no interested in discovering truth, they are only interested in dismantling everyone else's beliefs.

Practicing healthy skepticism results in peace of mind because it helps you deal with the tremendous amount of bullshit out there and get down to what is really worth investigating. Skeptics don't deny there is truth, they don't deny people can know things, they only investigate the claims people make about what is true but upon investigation the things which most people believe turn out to be bulldada.

I won't bash skeptics, because IMO they only strengthen arguments. Unless they're asking the wrong questions. People's intelligence shows clearly enough by the questions they ask.

I think good skeptics are abundant around here.

Teenagers especially love skepticism because they can destroy all their stupid peers' arguments with it. Strangely enough it's not the teenagers who are skeptics in here :sherlock:

BTW, I aim to participate in your other thread, just haven't gone through the posts.

  I just finished destroying a lengthy reply to MushroomTrip in the other thread so I thought I'd pop in and say I am looking forward to your participation.
