do the repugs still control congress??...

i would claim that the answer is a resounding yes..despite apparent substantial democratic majorities in both the house and the senate...i say "apparent" because ..a "majority" in the senate is 60%.. and the senate repugs are a monolith that solidly represents the far-right base...as long as the monolith holds at least 41 seats..they have at the very least a unilateral veto power over the house and the rest of the senate...

furthermore..since the democrats lack a singular base..there is a substantial minority of "blue dog" democrats that will cross aisles to form an effective 51% repugnican majority.. which often fails to engender a 41% veto bloc from the remaining democrats...

what all this means is that no legislation can pass that does not have the full blessing and support of the far right repugnicans in the senate.. in effect leaving them firmly in control of the legislative branch as a whole...it also means that..contrary to what redstorm would have us believe..the repugs did control all 3 branches of govt during the bush administration (despite the democrats holding 51 senate seats in 2001-2002 and 2007-2008).. and the repugs continue to control 2 branches of govt today...

I don't know what this 60% claim is about- does it have anything to do with your constitutional mumbo jumbo?  You referring to fillibuster proof majorities?


Just cuz someone can fillibuster does not mean they have a majority.

I don't fault her for not liking republicans, but it is sad that she cannot see that democrats are equally responsible for the problems that she illustrates.  I cannot fathom why people have such blind faith in their pet political party, to the exclusion of accountability or common sense.

Right, I was asking to figure out what it could possibly be.  All the things she normally mentions were supported by democrats, so the preference seems silly.  A perfect illustration of how americans screw themselves.


You don't even need a thrid party- all you need is an electorate that doesn't vote on party preference.  I vote third party but you don't even need to do that.  Just stop voting for candidates due to their party or their opponents party.

democrats share some of the blame simply because they cant keep the "blue dogs" in their cages...but its ludicrous to claim that they are "equally" responsible for what the repugs have wrought...

however..as you point out..democrats and repugnicans are not polar opposites...the mere fact that the repugs are all right-wing moonbats doesnt make the democrats all left-wing moonbats..unfortunately...

the correct answer is .."no..but they could have"...more specifically..if the democrats had a singular base like the repugs..then yes..they could have exercised the same veto power to create the opposite situation that exists now...but since they dont have a singular base..they cant even control congress with a majority in both houses...
