Laptop randomly shutting down when gaming - overheating?
    #10098257 -

so I have a fairly good gaming laptop, 2.4ghz duo core overclocked to 2.6.. 6GB RAM, 2x8800GTs in SLi.. Windows Vista
had it for almost.. 2 years now? Upgraded twice.. never had any major issues with it...
I've played CRYSIS on medium-high settings on this thing for hours at a time and never had so much as a stutter..

Lately, like the past 2 weeks.. if anyone plays pretty much any full-screen game, (CS, Bioshock, UT, TF2 etc..).. it will run for about 2-15 minutes then the PC just shuts off. I'm thinking it's probably heat related since I haven't cleaned it out in a while... speedfan says the cores are running around 75-85C, HD at about 40. There's no way to adjust the fan speeds or anything. I have a cooling pad but it's out of commission atm.. that could have something to do with it because I always ran it with the cooling pad before.

So.. likely a heat issue? I was going to get some of that canned air shit, open it up a little and clean out the dust.. I'm worried since the cores are running hot that I may need to get to the processor.. clean the heatsink and/or apply more thermal paste.. but that's gotta be a bitch to open this thing up that much and I wouldn't want to fuck anything up.. never ripped open a laptop before aside from changing ram or HD. Is it a fairly intensive process to get to the CPU?

I notice as soon as I run a game it jumps up to ~95C

Yes. I've seen this many times before, and cleaning it will solve everything. Compressed air might not be enough though - you might need to take it apart until you find the clogged air vent or heat sink.

I've been inside laptops hundreds of times. It is kind of difficult the first time. If you chose to do this, make sure you remember where the pieces go. It helps to reassemble it in exactly the reverse order you took it apart in. Heating problem is very likely.

You say the processor is heating up. If that's the case then it's probably a bit more than compressed air to fix. Though you should still try it with just compressed air at first. Use that, reassemble, and try again and see how that goes. Make sure you start the computer while its cool though. If it's already hot then it may shut off again even if the problem is resolved.

If youre still having problems, I'd try going for the processor. If youre any good at putting things together and w/ electronics then you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I'm sure I don't need to say this but if something's not coming off, then something is holding it down, don't keep pulling.

on a lighter note, you play CS? 1.6 or source?

Ha Ive never understood the laptop gaming monsters, they are useless for anything except a desktop replacement and at that point you might as well just buy a desktop   Anyways, clean out the fans, then consider getting a laptop cooler.  The things that sit below the laptop and get rid of the hot air coming out of the laptop.  Ive seen those things work on the laptop behemoths.

Is that temp for the CPU or GPUs? Either way, 95C is WAY, WAY too hot.

That was the CPU. And yeah.. that's why I was worried.. I know 100C is like the red line for core 2s when shit will start frying...

So I just spent the last 2 hours ripping it apart ... I wasn't able to get all the way in.. I got the drives out, keyboard, top cover plate, and screen off.. I was almost at the mobo but then I pussied out cause I didn't want to fuck it up.. and for some reason I couldn't get the main cover plate off and I didn't want to force it. I dunno... I've dealt with tons of desktops but for some reason screwing with my laptop scares me. I just stuck the compressed air tube down into cracks, fans, empty spaces and blasted it.. shitloads of dust came out... but I'm convinced there's most likely a clog somewhere or the heatsink is dirty..

Also got a USB cord for my laptop cooler (that's all I was missing).. right now the cores are running at ~55C but I just started it back up about 30 minutes ago.. I'll see what it stabilizes at then try some gaming to see how hot it runs.

I think I got most of the dust out, and the ZALMAN (FTW) cooling fan is definitely helping .. but we'll see.
Maybe if I'm feeling ballsy in a couple weeks I'll rip the whole damn thing apart, clean the heatsink and apply some new thermal grease.
But I was just looking at a disassembly guide for my laptop and I basically have to take EVERYTHING apart to get to the CPU and heatsink.. disconnect every cable.. pull out the mobo, remove the video cards.. etc.
I guess the main part I'm worried about is all the cables and crap.. I took apart like 5 or 6 cables but they were easy enough to remember..

ok wow.. so much better now...

Running idle at 54C..............

Running TF2 for 30 minutes.. a full virus scan.. 2 browsers windows open with like 8 tabs.. trillian.. and a couple other programs.
Staying stable at like 72-75C
Damn what a difference!

and Platinum.. I play CS 1.6

Not for a laptop. That's quite okay.

This is CPU temp, not chassis temp. 54C is pretty hot for the chassis but not for the CPU.

It is an overclocked laptop... what do you expect?  Yeah, it is a bit hot, but it isn't a problem.  If it were at 80C idle, then it would be an issue.

^^^

I missed that part too, the first time I read the post.  I don't get overclocking a laptop.  Might as well add external watercooling for all the sense that it makes.  To each their own, I suppose.

Yeah, I wish I would have known the heat issues some laptops have for even stock configurations prior to buying mine.

Never again- heat and power input issues will be the two most important things I'll look at after buying a practically unusable laptop from dell.

I just ended up resetting the processor back to default settings.

I initially had it overclocked in order to milk every ounce of performance out of it for optimum gaming.
A lot of people overclock their laptops.. it's pretty common amongst the laptop gaming community.
Yes I know if I want "optimum gaming".. get a desktop. That's not the issue. I travel a lot and lugging a desktop around everywhere you go is not very ideal..

And yeah its the CPU idling at about 54C. The chassis is about 35.

Besides, it's more manly to have an EXTREMELY hot computer.

I just got a laptop fan and it works pretty well, but I think my computer got fucked over from over heating too many times while gaming, its a pos dell tho.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

You have to understand that not only users overclock cpu's and video chipsets.

Both nvidia for instance and dell have overclocked cpu's and chips alike. and send them into the market as new and 'faster' variations not mentioning that they are infact old chips which just been overclocked and run hotter.

this happens quite alot and isnt illegal. do take it in account.

overclocking your cpu is in general a bad idea unless you really know what you are doing. in the short its not worth it.
