Computer randomly short circuts
    #5718625 - 06/06/06 11:34 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

It's really annoying, when I'm in the middle of something in the blink of an eye my computer will shut off, then i have to reconnect the power supply for it to turn on again. I have replaced the power box, and i doubt its over heating (although its a possibility). I have also just replaced the power cable to see if that helps any. So far so good.

Any ideas on where the problem may lie.. faulty CPU/Motherboard maybe??

Peace,
Mushie Man

Well my first guess would have been a bad power supply...but you say you've already replaced it and still have the same problem eh?

Over-heating could be a cause, although with the over-heat circuitry on many modern CPU's I wouldn't expect the computer to shut down. Do you have an Intel or AMD processor, and what model is it? If it's a newer Intel it should just get really slow if it starts to overheat. AMD chips will usually reboot the system - not shut it completely off.

So if it's not your power supply or your CPU...I would guess you have a faulty motherboard.

> I would guess you have a faulty motherboard.

Some laptops have a "charge board" or a "power board" or a "dc in boarD" in them rather than integrating everything onto the motherboard. I have also seen a bad "lid closed" switch cause odd problems with a laptop, but that was putting it to sleep, not off.

This is a very common problem. It's often called the X factor, and your power supply has hit it's limit. It is a sign of excessive ware due to vibrations usually caused by a low wank angle.

To fix this problem.
1. Raise your wank angle by 15 degrees or more.
2. Burn at least 2/3 of your porn to DVD and move it to your bedroom.
3. Quit shaking your cum-putor at the computer.

It had better be, 'cause it isn't the batter if it is a desktop.

i dunno, had that problem awhile ago, had to do the exact same thing... with having to actually cut the power to the power supply to get it to boot up again... i think my actual problem was an incredible amount of dust caked in the fan on the cpu... i tried a handful of other things too, like switching the order of my RAM, etc. not sure what finally got it to behave again. good luck, that's an awfully frustrating one.

i get the same problem, ill be doing something and it will randomly shut off...
sometimes after it shuts off, ill try to restart and shut off like 5 times will rebooting

no idea whats causes this, my last comp did the same thing..

theres an option in bios to disable the overheat shutoff option, but mine still shuts off... so i think its a power or motherboard issue...
usually after a new motherboard it wont happen for a couple months

Ah, I see. There are two threads right now for busted computers and the other is for a laptop. My bad.

One common method of failure on logic boards is from over voltage. When this happens, the caps on the board start to leak. This is easy to see when it happens. Unplug the computer and then take the side off. Look at the main board that everything plugs into. Examine each electrolytic capacitor to ensure that it isn't leaking and that the top isn't bulged out. Both are signs of a bad board.

The caps have the same shape as a soda can, but are a bit smaller than a thimble. The tops should be completely flat. The seams in the top should not have any crud in them. See the picture below for a bit of help:

Boards with bad caps do odd things. Sometimes they will work fine, only to lockup randomly. Other times they will not work at all.

Thank you for the replies. I haven't been home in a few days so i haven't had much use of my computer. When i first started using it again, around 1:15pm, it worked fine up until 20 minutes ago (5:15). Since then it has shut off twice.

I have attempted to clear some dut out of the heat-sink/fan using my vacuum and reconnected the ram and hard drive.

Not sure if that will help, but this is really fucking me off. I forgot to mention my hard drive isn't in the best working condition. It runs at 30GB rather than 80 and i have to press F1 on start up because my system says my hard drive status is bad and is in need of replacement. Don't see how this could effect my system in such a way though. Havent got the cash to replace.

Peace,
Mushie Man
