Computer shutting down randomly
    #4211402 - 05/23/05 08:40 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Grrrrrr....I fucking hate computers!(but not as much as they hate me) Lately I've found my computer shutting down at random times. WTF? Is there anything I can do about this?

Most likely a bad power supply or it's overheating.

Does your computer shut down or restart?
Generally when a power supply is going bad it will restart at random.
I've also seen bad motherboards cause the same thing especially with the electrolytic capacitors around the processor area become bulged on the top, when this happens the capacitor breaks down & can't filter & regulate voltage properly. They also can start leaking electrolyte out of them when the start to bulge.
Did you add or change any hardware before this happened?
More hardware requires more power.
Newer video cards require more power.
Did you make any changes in the bios as far as overclocking memory or cpu before this happened?

This has happened to two machines I have owned and both times it was RAM at fault.

It might not be a hardware problem (although it does sound like a PS prob)

Before you buy new hardware, check your windows services. All the services have an option to automatically turn the computer off if the service fails. Many of these are turned on by default and are not neccesarly vital to your OS's operation...

Yeah, I have also seen this problem before with Windows XP & Windows 2000. You can check it by right click "My Computer", select "Advanced" tab, select "Startup & Recovery" & under "System Failure" look to see if "Automatically Reboot" is checked. If it is you can try to uncheck it & reboot to see if you still experience the problem.

Another suggestion:

Check windows system event viewer at the time of the last shut-down.

It should tell you the exact problem.

agreed. i'd say half the computers that come into my shop with this problem, if the fans are working, its been the RAM. have you reset you bios or tried to overclock your RAM lately?

I've found my computer shutting down at random times

My ex used to do that too; it usually meant I was in trouble...

Clean out your computer. My computer did that, but then I took it outside and cleaned all the dust in it (sweet jesus there was tons in there... yucky) and it's been running like a champ ever since.

Put it on a chair with the internals exposes and use a straw to blow air all over the inside and clean it out. Don't waste your money on one of those expensive ridiculous spray cans.

hahaha

sounds like a good way to hyperventilate!

I recommend taping swiffer sweepers on the outside of all your case fans once you get the dust out. Make sure you leave the case closed and that the rest is sealed well (i.e. no pci holes, etc.), and you wont see dust like that for a looong time.

Yeah same here; without warning and nothing you do or try otherwise will fix it.

This started happening to my computer, what fixed it for me was opening it up and cleaning off all the fans. My computer had a little fan inside too that was covered with dust that I wouldn't have gotten to without opening it. It was A LOT of dust, I guess the best solution is just open it up and clean it like this once or twice a year.

I've never had the ram in a laptop cause it to shut down like that, but I have had a faulty hard drive cause that fault twice. And very intermittently... at first

Just a thought!

My wife is having the same problem with her laptop. At first I thought it was a problem with Windblows, because it is a notoriously crappy operating system (for those of us who are familiar with a variety of OS's). I did every patch available and looked at everything I could in windows to see if there was something wrong - dead end. Because of the confined spaces for components, laptops are much more vulnerable to problems associated with dissipating heat. I decided (after the computer had been up for quite awhile) to reboot and take a look at the bios screens and settings (sometimes there is a CPU temperature reading and setting for an alarm in one of the bios displays - which is what I was looking for). While I was attempting to step through the bios settings, the computer suddenly shut down. I know for sure it's not windows and think it is an overheating problem. Tomorrow we'll try and vacuum it out, I have some attachments designed for my shop vac and they work quite well for getting into the confined spaces of a computer. I suggest that you try to get yours clean as well. I tend to avoid compressed air or blowing into a computer - the point is to pull the dust out of the components.

you might have a virus and/or adware that has taken over your comp. if your comp is relativly new, it shouldnt be your power supply.
