my new used laptop randomly shuts itself off

well, the title pretty much explains it all. the battery sucks, but i doubt thats the issue because this happens with it plugged in as well. sometimes it will run a few hours before it happens, sometimes like just a little while ago it happened after running for only about half an hour. i get no errors, no warnings or anything just bam, its off. any ideas?
the laptop is a hp pavilion ze4500 if that helps any
and just for shits and giggles heres a pic of one

and on a side note, the computer says that with the battery fully charged i should have a little over 2 hours of running time. but it eats through the fully charged battery in about 45 min. maybe i need a new one? i dunno.
aside from all that i really like the thing. i was thinking of doing a reformat/reinstall to see if that might help. i doubt it could hurt any anyway.
im off to work.

random shutting off sounds like some heat issue to me, try reading your core/system temps and check for peaks.
also, get a new battery, pepare to lay down cash, those are $$$.

heat issues on this laptop cause a BSOD for me, then shut down, i have a hp pavilion 4420 by the way, and it looks exactly the same as that one. you may want to try taking the battery out and leaving it plugged it to run it at home, then see if it shuts off still. Mine does sometimes because the spot where the AC adapter plugs into the laptop is loose, and if i wiggle it i can see the orange power light on the front go on and off, it annoys the shit out of me when im reading something online, and go to change sitting positions and it shuts off...

Are you still under warranty? If you don't know, PM me your serial number and product number and I can look it up for you.
Heat is not likely the problem. Heat issues are usually time related, not random. In other words, the machine will shut down after 15 minutes, every time, if it is heat. (Not always, but usually.)
If you PM me your info, when I get into work on Tuesday, I will scan through all the service notes for the machine and see if they have any notes related to your problem, assuming I can access them. I have full access to the business line support documentation, but limited access to commercial line of products.
I have seen a bad/failing hard drive cause your exact symptoms on a compaq laptop a few years back. On most HP laptops, you can test the hard drive from BIOS. It takes about 20 minutes or more to run. IPS test, or something close to that under the disk or storage menu.

hhmmm. something simmilar happened to me. it turned out to be a power error. the power distribution box was faulty. id get a hardware check, because it doesnt seem like a software problem. perhaps its even a BIOS error.

naw, a virus usually fucks you over using software, not a random shutdown. and any standard security system should have blocked it.
and a virus would have to work regularly, and he said that it shut down randomly.
it wouldnt hurt to check, though.

friend of mine had this same problem with his laptop - its either a power or processor overuse issue -
either the hardware/applications you are running require too much juice:
- Too much power is being dedicated to one piece of hardware - Your processor is dedicating too much energy to a certain component (hardware or software) being used
There is not enough left over to power the cpu (i think) and it all dies... thats what i remember of the problem anyways... Or faulty equip - most likely power....

so i been playing around with pc wizard, watching the cpu temp as i play around with different things on the comp. the cpu temp generaly stays around 140-155 degrees, with the hard dist temp between 110-120. except for when i run milkdrop, the cpu temp shot up to about 180 before i closed milkdrop. it then drops back down to the 140-155 range.
now the times it shuts itself off havent always been with milkdrop running, but enough times for me to think that maybe it would be a good idea to not run milkdrop on this computer.
anybody here know how hot is too hot for a cpu?

Get a can of blow-off and put it through the intake fan (should be on the bottom, but it could be anywhere). This will clear the pitifully small heat sink.
You'll notice a cloud of dust, and the fan will go really fast. Problem solved.
Best to do this outside...

There are two fans in his laptop. The one with the heatsink is located at the back left (as if you were sitting at the laptop to type) of the laptop. It may exhaust out the left back side rather than the left back itself. Hard tell from the service manual. The second fan is located at the back of the machine, about midway left to right.

ive been messing around, running different shit while watching the temps. seems i only have problems when i try to run something thats pretty graphics extensive, like games and milkdrop etc. also ive started propping the back end of the computer up with about 5 empty jewel cases so there is some more space between the table and the fans. that seemed to help dramatically.
it looks to me my problem is heat. the thing has been on for about 20 hours now (forgot to shut it down last night) with no problems. now that ive propped up the back end for more air circulation it seems to run quite smoothly, topping out at about 155 degrees, but usually stays somewhere between 135 to 145.
thats if i only use it for surfing, messaging, music, that sort of thing. (which is all i really want it for anyway, so im happy) but like i said earlier, once i run milkdrop i can watch the temp rocket up to 180, 190....ive only tested this a few times and since then have quit running the program.
im just a little bummed out that it cant run milkdrop with out getting too hot and shutting itself off. oh well, i guess i cant complain too much. i was just so excited at the thought that i might finally have a computer that can run it smoothly. and it can, for about two minutes
anyway, all has been well. havent had any problems with it for a while now.

Sounds like a clogged heat sink, probably near your video processor. Spend the $5 and go nuts with the dust-off.
