Transcendental Meditation
    #10116071 -

Just wondering if anyone here has ever had any experiences with this.

Ringo star and George Harrison just did a concert to raise money for the David Lynch Foundation which essentially is a foundation promoting transcendental meditation.

If a star endorses it you gotta do it.

Whats is the furthest you can go?

When everything is transcended, where will you be left?

:rofl2:

The idea of a zombie performing a concert for meditation is just too amusing. :smirk:

This sort of meditation is mantra meditation where you sit down and repeat a mantra to yourself.

I try and incorporate this in my irregular meditation sessions. Usually I do zazen where I simply focus and count breaths, but adding the world "Om" in between breaths(sometimes several times) gives me a deepening effect. I also believe "Om" is a world which resonates and stimulates the Pineal gland, or Third Eye.

I usually repeat the mantra 'Om Shanti Ya' at night when I wish to induce a smooth transition into the lucid dreaming state.

Not sure what it precisely means, but the lack of association produced by it (as opposed to meaningful English words) helps my mind focus.

How long would one sit and repeat a mantra?

Does anyone have a preferred time of day?

I know that for transcendental meditation it's recommended for 2 periods of 20 minutes a day

After I put the coffee on in the morning and before I go to bed.

And yes, meditating is a great way to relax, second only to marijuana.

My advice is to find those things that give pleasure and do them often without too much attachment and relax and wait for the show to end.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

George Harrison has been dead for a while now, so what do you mean by "just did?"
And yes, I was in teacher training for TM in 1975. I was 3 weeks away from going to Switzerland to be initiated by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi when I defected. I read a tract by a former TMer turned Christian who discovered some unpleasant truths about the entire organization, as well as the source and meaning of the mantras and how they were selected. I looked into it and found those revelations to be accurate, so I dropped out. Just as well because they would've forced me to shave my beard and cut off my long hair to fit the 3-piece executive model of instructor. They phoned me once and threatened to prevent me from ever returning. Big deal. I was reading the New Testament about that time and took initiation in that 'scene' instead (namely, baptism). No regrets. I stopped using that mantra over 30 years ago. Their mantras caused some weirdness in people. I haven't met anyone in decades who still practices TM.

to me trascendental meditaion is not a fad that passed in the 60's its a timeless practice of transcending the mind which beings have been doing forever, all meditation is transcendental, otherwise it is a waste of time, infact everything in existence is there for transcendence

The Buddha's meditation was transcendental, as was Jesus', as was Mohammeds as was Lao Tzus...

mantras are to make the mind one pointed

one pointedness can only be on an object, what lies beyond the perceived object, the Self, is the goal of meditation
