Re: Obama climate plan could cost $2 trillion [Re: Hypercube]

I completely disagree. I think it's a sad that the consensus of all the world's climate experts is being disregarded because the fossil fuel industry (and associated right-wing interests) are capitalising on humanity's desire to hear good news... we want to be told that it's not as bad as we thought and that we can keep on polluting the world.

I do not buy into the idea that the climate scientists are just trying to keep their job. That is ridiculous. If you're a scientist you don't keep your job by falsifying data, because there's always someone looking over your shoulder.

Now I'm not going to argue about over-hyped scaremongering like 20ft sea rises. But even the conservative estimates regarding drought are cause for concern. I live in a country that's had a drought on-and-off for twenty years. If it gets worse it'll destroy our food supply.

Is that why State Climatologists Patrick Michaels, George Taylor and David Legates were issued gag-orders by their respective Governors and told not to speak their views on global warming as State Climatologists?  Gov. Kulongoski justified himself by saying that Taylor's views "interfere with the state's stated goals to reduce greenhouse gases."  Scientific positions have been politicized and many scientists who hold contrary views to DAGW proponents have been removed or have shut up under pressure.  There's always someone looking over your shoulder for sure! (to make sure you're saying what he wants you to).

So you automatically attribute a dry spell to AGW?  Maybe you're right, but I'd like to see some solid evidence that there is a long-term drying trend attributable to global warming in your country.  More likely it is just a dry spell, or your climate is changing of its own accord in a way that you don't like.  I understand why you want a scapegoat, but please prove it to me.

Indeed, just as there have been pressure put on scientists working in organisations that have an interest in downplaying global warming. Politicisation works both ways, but it doesn't change the evidence.

Sorry I should have made myself more clear. What I meant to say is that over here we're all too painfully aware of the devastating effects of drought. For whatever reason, Australia is dryer than it was earlier in the 20th century, so our agricultural industry is already on the brink of collapse. I'm not saying that it was caused by global warming, but that if global warming brings more drought - and even conservative estimates indicate that it will - then we're in serious trouble. If that happens elsewhere in the world then we'll all be in a pretty bad predicament, considering there are already riots over food prices.

GW is supposed to cause drought and flooding in areas as many areas will receive a net increase and decrease in rainfall. However the most significant drought will be that which results from a depletion of glaciers and an end of glacier fed rivers. This effectively turns once constant flows of water into seasonal devices. It will make the ability to get water much more complicated than it is known to be now.

btw a large increase in sea level will be likely when the Greenland ice sheet falls off. In India, entire villages have been submerged because the country has a large amount of low lying areas near the ocean.

Why can't this administration realize that the taxpayer got screwed in the market because of all the back door securities bs and now the government is taxing us again?

We need to stop bailing out these fucking companies and start slashing spending. We need to cut taxes as much as possible. A serious discussion about Health Care and S.S. reform need to happen.

A deadline on when to meet green house gas emissions reductions over the long term is a good idea. Taxing people is a bad idea in the short term. I know we are strapped for cash for the Federal Government's immense amounts of spending and debt but there is a better way. The free market. Companies will adjust when they have a deadline to meet that has an enforcement mechanism for companies that can't meet it. No more excuses and delays because of our impact.

I think there has been an open deadline for companies to innovate to reduce greenhouse gasses for a while, without actual consequences I don't think the market will do any more voluntarily than it already has.

The free market also provides a neat solution, though. Simply ensure the cost of polluting is borne by the polluter, rather than externalised as it currently is.

26 Democrats joined all 41 Republicans

Barack Obama suffered a major defeat in his quest to impose a cap-and-trade system on the US energy sector last night, as the Senate formally rejected any attempt to pass such a scheme through budget reconciliation rules.  In fact, two-thirds of the Senate voted against such a move, with 26 Democrats crossing the aisle to protect the filibuster for cap-and-trade legislation

Whew! All Americans dodged a bullet with that one.

The war isn't over, though - this was a victory in a single battle. There will be others, because Obama has swallowed hook line and sinker the Global Warmening bullshit. He won't stop pushing it.

Ten years down the line because of this failure American companies may not own assets in most developed and some non-developed nations. They will not be competitive in societies where polluters are punished and shunned. If America keeps this archaic policy about global warming it will be it's end.

Inhofe Report Exposes Environmental Groups as ‘Massive Democratic Political Machines’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, today released an updated comprehensive investigation into the financial and political activities employed by charitable and environmental organizations claiming to be non-partisan. [See today’s updated full report: Political Activity of Environmental Groups and their Supporting Foundations - Previously in 2004 Senator Inhofe released the original report on environmental group funding. See: INHOFE RELEASES DETAILED REPORT ON ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP POLITICAL FUNDRAISING – October 5, 2004]

“Campaigns to ‘save the cuddly animals’ or ‘protect the ancient forests’ are really disguised efforts to raise money for Democratic political campaigns,” Senator Inhofe said during a floor speech today presenting the new report. “Environmental organizations have become experts at duplicitous activity, skirting laws up to the edge of illegality, and burying their political activities under the guise of non-profit environmental improvement.

“Take this ad for example, displayed on the League of Conservation Voters, or LCV, website. This is LCV’s standard text used to raise money for the nonprofit organization. In turn, LCV takes these donations, given to ‘save the environment’ and uses them to fund ads for Democratic Candidates such as Ben Lujan from New Mexico. LCV, similar to other groups I’ll highlight later, disguises itself as an environmental group dedicated to saving the environment, yet, as shown by this political ad, it is simply an extension of the Democratic political party.

“What we find now is the fleecing of the American public's pocketbooks by the environmental movement for their political gain.  We also find exhausting litigation, instigation of false claims, misleading science, and scare tactics to fool Americans into believing disastrous environmental scenarios that are untrue. Especially in this election year, the American voter should see these groups and their many affiliate organizations as they are: the newest insidious conspiracy of political action committees and perhaps the newest multi-million dollar manipulation of federal election laws.

Luddite, what you have provided so far is acceptable - articles showing fraud (falsification of results) and political activities and political ties and fundraising, etc. of various environmental groups is within the scope of this forum's mandate. But you (and all responding posters) need to stay on the correct side of the line with any followup posts. if this thread looks like it is heading toward another multi-page clash of graphs and charts and statistical tables, it will be locked.

This isn't the Science and Technology forum. It is one thing to discuss policy related to climate change, quite another to initiate yet another multi-page episode of "dueling scientists".

Luddite's articles are not about the science of Global Warmening, but about the political connections of its cheerleaders - just as the Warmenists never try to rebut Spencer's (or other skeptics') findings, but instead try to dismiss him as being "in the pay of the oil companies" - and about cooking the books, or fraud. Fraud is fraud, no matter which side of the debate it is applied to.

you are such a whore for your ideology. Like 2 of his links cover what could be considered fraud, the rest are the kind that you wouldn't permit if it were us posting them. Fortunately it's Luddite though so nobody will pay attention anyway.

Though I hardly see how an environmental group contributing to the democratic party can't be non-partisan. Since Reagan the republican party has basically been at war with the environment. What's wrong with funding pro-environment democrats particularly against anti-environment republicans. I'm sure these organizations would probibly give money to a pro-environment republican if there was one running against an anti-environment democrat.
