Substrate Too Tight?

This is my first time growing and my first time posting. I was wondering will the substrate being too tight actually stop growth or just slow it way down. I inocculated 5 jars on 10/ 3 and only one is close to being fully colonized. From my observations this jar was the most loose out of all of them. Two are pretty close behind, and the other two seem to have stopped. A little info would be appreciated thanks.

Yes, packing too tight will slow mycellial growth. Just spoon the substrate in and leave it fluffier for faster colonization.

dont feel bad, my cat is still waiting for his jars, and he innoc. them sept 14th... he was told to flip them for a couple od days to push out the co2 and suck in o2 then flip them upright again. he too packed the substrate a little tight, so although everything is OK, there just taking longer than usual, and the flipping will keep the myc from suffocating during extended incubation periods. my cat sais that if you just have patience, it'll work out.

I think you meant to reply to the original poster, not me.

is it that big of a deal that he hit the reply botton on ur post. I think its pretty obvious that he was replying to the original message.
As for substrate being to tight to stop growth, i'm not sure about that, but it wont be optimal growth thats for sure. Next time try to make it really loose and airy. And like Cerebral said.. flip em upside down to let out some CO2.

One way you can correct this Over-packing is: Fill the jars with your VERM/BRF/WATER mixuter with a spoon. Do big scoops at a time. Fill them until they are to the very top (Nice and fluffy). Next, Take the jar and hit it lightly on a towel thats lying on the counter top. This should drop the mixture down about a 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. This procedure worked VERY well for a friend of mine when he used the Pf Tek.

Yes actually it is that big of a deal, because if you address your post to the wrong person, you will cause unnecessary confusion.
As for the substrate being too tight for growth, well the tighter the substrate, the longer the colonization time; the longer the colonization time, the more water evaporates from the substrate and greater chance for contamination.

thanks. I flipped my jars and in as little as 18 hrs. I noticed a little more growth. When should I flip my jars back over though?

generally when mine are about 2/3 colonized I will flip them over and just leave them like that... But if you're using a water incubator I'm not sure if thats the best idea.

Maybe your verm size is too small, this prevents large gaps. Nature took 4 weeks for the fastest jar and the other jars are gonna take 6 weeks! I used a spoon to scoop em but still too tight. Im gonna try using some perlite with the verm to add bulk

Ok, Now it's been about 4 days. One cake is almost ready to birth and two are right behind it. But my last two have shown no sign of growth since I flipped them They are in an incubator made of a sterlite{rubbermaid} container with plenty of light and the jar and fishtank heater heating system. Just curious about what's going on. Or just an impatient newbie?

Why do you have light in your incubator?

There is no light in my incubator other than the light that comes through the sides. It is a clear rubbermaid container that I also plan on using as a fruiting chamber when cakes are birthed.

If you got a clear incubator, you may want to wrap your jars in a towel. Too much light can induce premature pinning, which isn't a huge problem unless its really premature, meaning there's pins before the substrate is halfway colonized, This could be a problem because those pins may rot which may lead to contamination.
