I just bought perlite and higher rubbermaids!
    #1007305 -

The rubbermaid containers are 10" high, so I can use how much? 1.5" deep perlite and fill that with .5 inch water. some questions. I know they might be stupid, so bear with me

1. should I rinse the perlite before using it or just dump it in the container and add water? What about the dust in the perlite?

2. The cakes, do they need to be evaluated how high above the perlite or will a flat aluminum foil underneath the cake be fine?

3. Should I bother with any rhyzomes that touch the perlite

4. will handling the cake damage it? Ill need to touch it as I dunk it and put it in the jar. If I apply slight pressure will that be fine?

5. I know its a good idea to dunk before each flush, but I see no reason to cold shock unless no pins after 2 weeks?

anything else? and no flames, this isnt off topic

I'll be nice to you this time since you need help growing. As for the perlite, make sure not to breathe in the dust as this is the equivalent of having millions of tiny shards of glass in your lungs. Flat foil will work fine, as long as there is enough of the perlite surface area to evaporate the water. Touch the cakes as little as possible and make sure your hands are clean when you do. I have never had the need to either dunk or cold shock cakes. I do however place them directly on the perlite for a couple days or so after each flush.

1. There is no need to rinse it, some ppl do, some ppl add h2o2, some ppl pasturaize it... it all depends on how paranoid u are. Even with the dust and crap in there it should be fine, but since rinsing it is such a quick and easy step.. go for it.

2. The cakes dont need to be elevated, they can touch the perlite directly if you want. The cakes will tend to soak alot of water directly from the perlite.. and most of your shrooms will grow from the bottom and tend to be water logged, so keep that in mind. If elevating them, i'd use something that has holes in it so your cakes wont end up sitting in a pool of water.

3. If your cakes are touching the perlite, some mycelium will tend to grow on the perlite.. nothing to worry about. Unless thats not what u were talking about.

4. Keep handling to a min, the more you do the more your mycelium will bruise, hence get damaged. Also by handling alot, you can intruduce contams, if your cakes are too weak, they wont be able to ward them off. Try to handle them with min pressure without dropping them.

5. I'm not sure this is even a question. Looks like a sentence with a question mark to me.

get a collinder or strainer whatever have you put your perlite in and run it under water, perlite will logically soak it all up right giving you the best/most possible water concentration without standing water.

I do like ^^^ said and just put my perlite in the strainer and rinse real well. This seems to do fine. And you are right that there is no need for a cold shock, and in that respect there is no need for a dunk, but both help, and don't really hurt, so why not do both?

I just pour the perlite right from the bag into the terrarium or container, using a water mister to keep the dust down. I throw a few cups of water (right from the tap...lots of chlorine) in, maybe add several drops of peroxide to the water first, or drop it on the perlite surface after. I don't put cakes directly on the perlite as you wind up with water-logged fat asses, and also increase contam possibilities. I use plastic coffee can-type lids, or plastic catfood keepers as bases...makes it easier to move the fukkers, tambien. Once a week I throw another cup of water onto the perlite. I keep it real simple & it works like a charm.

I opened lid, sniffed and it smells musty and slightly lemony but no strong odors. Then I threw the dry verm in the trash. There were traces of roots poking thru the dry verm. I then flame sterilized a knife and trimmed some of the cake, about 10% so the top is smaller then I stuck the knife along the wall of the glass and pried the cake out. I hope I didnt damage it too much, I had to dig on the outer edge of the cake in order to remove it so now theres a small vertical mark along one side of the cake. Its sitting in a container of water now. Wont it have no oxygen?

Unless you have deoxygenated water, you should be fine.

as long as you elevate the cakes off the perlite yu'll be ok.
you will have oxygen in there, don't worry about that.
i would air it out once a day, a simple 3 second fanning is all it takes.
this prevents the co2 build up, which is much more common in casing but never the less it will indeed help.
good luck.

The cake has been in the water for 9 hours. . Think its time to put it in the rubbermaid with 2" of perlite?

Dude, I think its great that you are trying to grow and from the sound of it, there is a chance that you will be successful, but damn man, do you read anything? If you do, you would know that most dunk teks say dunking must occur for no shorter than 12 hours.
