Perlite in aquarium
    #1076189 - 11/22/02 10:11 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

i have just made two casings. I put saran wrap over them and with a thumb tack made about 7 really small holes in each. I have them on my heating pad incubating. Once that is done i'm going to put the casing in the fridge for 24 hours and them into my terrerium

QUESTIONS- i bought perlite. Do i spread this on the bottom of my terrerium? IF so what does it do and how big of a layer?

Also, i cover the top of the fish tank with saran wrap and fan it out a couple times a day right? I know with cakes you have to mist the terrerium but do u do the same with casings? thanx alot guys!

the saran wrap will keep in the humidity, but if you have a terrarium, forget about the saran wrap.  put your casing in the fridge now, take it out tomorrow, put it in the terrarium on top of an inch of moist perlite, put the saran wrap over the whole terrarium and fan it out once in awhile. you want a light over the terrarium, and keep it at 75 degrees.  good luck.

alrite thanx....

One last Q..... I just cased the cakes last night. Incubating right now. How long should it take before i see an even casing? Right after that i would toss them in the fridge right?

i would not put a casing directly on a heating pad.

casings don't need as much humidity as cakes. depending on the size of your casing and the size of the fish tank, a wet layer of perlite on the bottom may be too much humidity for the casing. i would test out just a pan of wet perlite first, if there is room; the plan being to just have something wet in there, not necessarily under the casing. no, you shouldn't need to mist.

oh ok. i didn't realize you just cased them. wait until you see some growth, if you want, patch it (put your substrate on the faster growing spots). when its about 30% colonized stick it in the fridge. It isn't even proven to work yet, but the cold shock is supposed to push induce (right word?) pinning. so put it in when you are ready, i usually wait to cold shock it until its pretty colonized. its preference.
