So I had 2 jobs this year, 2 W2s to file. i complete my first, i see i get a nice hefty refund. now i make more money at my second job, which i know doesnt necessarily mean more money back but i figured hey! even a little bit is great!

well... my 2nd job not only brought me back down to 0 money back, but now i owe a shit laod of money. and turbotax doesnt even allow you to do investment shit unless you pay, wtf is that? i was doing it for free, but now im thinking maybe i made a mistake, and since i cant do the investment shit, im thinkin ill just bring it to H&R block or somethin.

what a load of shit. i was going to use my tax return for a rothbury ticket too.

Tell me about it; friend of mine owns a small business and is taking it hard this year; 14 000 in taxes and when your only earning about 80k a year and taking less than 10k for your living expenses it can be infuriating.

EDIT: To clear that up, he doesn't just own it and work on the side its his full time job as well.

try being self-employed.

first 10k, something like 30% federal, 10% state; next 10k, 25% federal, 5% state.

If you're gonna pay, make sure they know whats going on.

Last year I went to H&R block and they were the biggest groups of morons I ever came across.  They pretty much had no idea what was going on and it ended up costing me like $150.

Idiots, never again.  If you pay, cough up the extra cash for a CPA.

yeah, this is the first tax year in a while that i've had to pay my own taxes as self-employed. i learned from the last time when i got hit with a 3k bill and no money to pay it, and did estimated tax returns. i'll end up getting like $200 back, which is crazy as when i was an employee and full-time student, i'd get like $2500 back - now that i'm my own boss and still a full-time student, i have to pay out the asshole.

i wouldn't mind if my taxes actually went to positive things. but propping up a joke of an economy and fighting worthless wars? no thanks.

Part of the reason you get a lower refund as self-employed is because what you pay in quarterly estimated taxes is more accurate to your actual tax rate than what is usually taken out of employed individuals' checks.

yeah, but also, when i was an employee my employer paid half of my federal & state witholding (the other half came out of my checks). now that i'm self-employed i have to pay both of those halves.

I'm not excited about paying that much, but it's worth it when I live in a country with these kinds of opportunities.
