Singing WHILE playing Guitar

Is proving to be horribly difficult :mad2:

Does anyone have any tips?

I figured I would start with Crash into Me by DMB. It is an easy song to play, with a constant strumming pattern and chord changes throughout the song. I can play the guitar parts with my hands tied behind my back (no small feet for a guitar part) but the second I try to open my mouth to sing my timing gets thrown out the window...

Anyone have any helpful insight?

Now I have even more of a respect for Hendrix, he was singing while playing some pretty difficult riffs... how does he do it??

I have trouble with that too.  I'm surprised I can walk and chew gum at the same time actually.

I'm bringing my acoustic down to Bonnaroo, and while I know around 50-75 songs, I don't know the lyrics that go along with one of them :mad2:

I picked 21 songs that I am gunna try and learn by then, so time is tight. I feel like once I get the hang of it, the songs will come easier, but this first week is going to be very trying.

for me,
practice practice practice
and associate different chords with different words
go with the flow
tis very difficuly
(I'd think it'd be easier
cuz i play bagpipes but it
is not the case)

It's nuts. I have tried and failed miserably. No idea how. I just can't concentrate on the guitar once I start singing.

You pretty much just have to play the song over and over until you can do it without thinking about it. You might know how to play a song, and even consider it effortless, but how much are you concentrating on your playing? You need to be able to break concentration and still keep playing. It's pretty tough. I can't say I'm very good at it either.

I don't really know how to help you, except just saying that it comes with practice.

I remember when I wasn't able to sing and play at the same time, but all of a sudden it just clicks.  Kind of like when you're first able to transition seamlessly from chord to chord.

I've recently gotten my first step, where I can hold a simple conversation while playing a song. However trying to read and memorize lyrics, while playing is still out of reach. I suppose I should memorize the lyrics before I try to put the 2 together? :shrug:

I found that humming the vocal parts is a good way to practice singing while playing. Once you have your brain somewhat used to doing the two things at once you can try to add in some words, then from there move on to actually singing it to its full potential.

Start small my friend!

oh yes, definitely, memorize the lyrics beforehand (at least while you're still getting the playing+singing thing down)

once you've got it, then you'll eventually be able to look at words and chords that you've never seen before and just play the song (provided you know how it goes!)

Dont start with Crash into me, the lyrics are all on up beats and off beats, it took me few try's to get that one down and still goof on it. Start simple like country or something like punk with your 3 chord songs. Just learn your subconcious metrodome and timing. Take a class it will help alot. Most these bands nowadays don't know a damn thing about what music really is. I'd love to see most of the lead singers out there play an insturment.. and they think they're all that and a bag of doritos...

boxcarguy was right when he said that at some point it just clicks. it happened for me that way. one tip i can give you, is play through all of your major chords and sing/harmonize with each chord, one at a time.

that is the only way i could think of to teach myself to sing in key. it worked wonders for me. not only did it teach me to sing in key, but it got me used to making vocalizations while i was playing the guitar. plus it showed me what kind of range my voice has. more simply put: it showed me which songs i sound decent enough to sing, and which ones i don't need to sing.

also, if you decide to go this route, making sure your guitar is tuned exactly right is key. you don't want to teach yourself to sing in key, but tuned down a half-step. you know what i mean?

I've been trying to master this for years, and still have much trouble.
As its been said, the biggest key is to be able to play the chords without though. Sounds easier than it is though.

Pick an easy song to sing and work from there. Try finding what beat the syllables of the words land on, and memorize when to sing what.

It was hard for me to sing and play guitar also when i started out, but you get used to it and it becomes second nature just like playing guitar

It didn't take long for me to play and sing together. I can't say I was always in key or on beat, though.

Tapping one foot on beat helps immensely; and if you can't hold a steady beat, practice while you listen to the radio.

And, yeah .. the key word's definitely practice. :rocket:

dont concentrate on whats happening on the guitar physically, just know how the song is going and be immersed in it. Your hand and throat will follow. Try songs that have vocals right on top of each chord. also try singing along to each chord- example, sing D to D, E to E and so on. and make a song out of it.

you pretty much have to play the song with your hands by habit,then the voice follows i think
