Something I wrote for you Hendrix entusiasts.
    #5674340 - 05/25/06 07:30 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Just found it on another thread but I didn't remember writting it so... maybe someone will find it interesting before it purges

Quote:

"Are you experienced" was one of the most revolutionary albums rock music has ever seen. From the start to finish it created incredible amounts of new sounds and guitar techniques never heard of before, while keeping a good standard song-wise. It's his rockiest work, and probably the easier to listen to.

If you want it for a party, this is your best bet.

"Axis:bold as love" is a little more mellow, showing better his songwriting skills and taking a more mature stance. The album is about love, in it's many ways. It is prominently a ballads album with such beautiful songs as "little wing" and "castles made of sand", IMHO Jimi's best lyrical work.

The song that gives the album its title is without a doubt one of the bravest ballads musically speaking I've heard to this date, and his use of colors to explain emotions is beautiful and gives it a psychedelic touch.
A nice election for a night with your girl or to relax smoking a joint and reading.

"Electric ladyland" What can I say about this album. It is IMO the greatest achievement in music of the last century, and my personal favorite of all times. The sounds Jimi achieved in this one hasn't been achieved by anyone else. THIS is the definition of psychedelic music.

But not only did jimi get the sounds of an acid trip right, he also composed some of the most amazing soulful songs, from "voodoo chile" a drunken, late night-ish spacial blues with the collaboration of Jack cassidy and Steve winwood, to "All along the watch tower" (even tho composed by Bob Dylan, it's considered by most to be Jimi's performing masterpiece), and the enormous "1983, a merman I should turn to be" (a song which takes a full side of the original four sides LP, and which I find one of the musical masterpieces of all times as far as I'm concerned) Jimi shows an amazing contrast in sounds while filling every second in the album with masterful guitar playing, songwriting and carefully chosen emotions.

Truly worth it for every situation, but specially for tripping. A trip without 1983 is not a trip  I seriously have had orgasms with that song on 2gr of mushies.

If I had to choose only one album to hear for the rest of my life, it would be Electric ladyland only for 1983, with Live at pompeii by Pink floyd in second place, then "The dark side of the moon" and then "axis bold as love"

I hope this wasn't too much of a reading, but I LOVE Jimi

Peace and happiness  :mushroom2:

bob wier jammed with jimi through the same amp in a tent at montery pop.. he didnt know who he was at the time, but he sure could play.. (or so it goes)

jimi almost played with the dead once, he showed up, side of the stage "ax in hand" but they were so deep into a jam, on lsd, that (i think mickey hart) he forgot to wave him on stage, and jimi just took off... talk about a missed oppertunity of a life time.. i would love to hear that show..

You inspired me to revisit these albums. Anyone with the slightest interest in psychedelic rock should own all three IMO.

Ahhh man I knew I should have edited that.  :crazy2:

Ok here is my thought on Hendrix. First off I love him, I am a guitarist and I know the players and their music. The best guitarist were form the 60's-70's.

I can not put him on the top of my list.

First he has only three albums and was only around for 3-5 years.

There are a boat load of guitarist with a lot more under there belt.

Now yes he was a music revolution, but only for those at that time. He did inspire a lot and even more can be contributed to him.

The problem is how do you define a great guitarist. I have tried and mostly failed cause it is not simple. But quantity and quality have to be there and they dont match up nicely.

Ahhh well that's a start  :stoned:

That's exactly why he is recognized as the best ever. He invented on his own at least 50% of today's rock guitar techniques and perfected a lot more that were only developing like feedback. And in the meantime he still managed to becoma a political figure for the hippie and civil rigths movement and a quite decent lyricist.

He was actually one of the most prolific musicians of the past century, I have around 8000 minutes of music he wrote in my collection. He wrote more than 60 -published- songs in 4 years, 4 times more than the average artist nowadays.

So I still don't get your point

Ya that is true (the quantity part) but I think he DEFINITELY makes up for it with quality.

He was soooooo far ahead of his time, fucking bastard for dying on us. Jim Morrison too.

Three years would be more accurate and he was putting the finishing touches on his 4'th album at the time of his death.

He has a ton of studio work out there, some great some bad. But he spent alot of time on the road playing live, which to me seperates the real guitarist from the fake studio musicians.

I'm not sure that's true but I don't think so, he actually recorded a song with a Wah pedal when he was with Curtis Knight called... oh surprise, wah wah :smirk: But it was later renamed "hush now" I think, pretty trippy song... hell, I'll upload it.

Fuckin' awesome song, it's so his style but you can note how he is still  developing what would become his signature prhasing  :crazy2:

Unfortunately it was destroyed by Douglas putting studio musicians on it imitating Hendrix. The official version is now re-edited without stupid imitations as "First rays of the new rising sun", as Hendrix originally intended at the time of his dead.
I IMPLORE you to get that one and listen to it how Jimi wanted it to be, not the butchered-down version  You won't regret it, it's probably Jimi's more mature album.

BTW, I should be sleeping like 4 hours ago (football match tomorrow) but instead I'm getting drunk listening Jimi's albums  I love you guys!!

Well there is more then one that can fit that. And that is subjective and not fact. He did influence the other greats at that time as they him and would have challenged them all, but he does not have the body of work to support that. For every great solo by him there are a hundred better ones. His lack of work is his worse shortcoming. I dont think you can compare some one like David Gilmour with 40 years to his 3 as equal. And I could give a shit about his politics, he was not a Lennon.

I dont think that you would get it. You still have not said anything that is not true of a least 100 other guitarist out there. He is great no doubt but there are more then just him. He died too soon and only will be a memory of what could have been.

Come up with a list a set of rules that defines the greatest guitarist. What are the factors, variables. Every time I do this I fail, and even when I come close his is not on that list.

Just my thought on this.....

I was just telling you he has a lot of work to show, you just haven't heard it apparently. I could upload shit you couldn't even imagine was him, because he just couldn't possibly publish everything he composed.

And about Gilmour, there's NOTHING Gilmour invented, and I'm a sucker for his guitar playing... actually, hear Gilmour on "A saurceful of secrets" and then on the golden years of Pink Floyd (1969-1981) and dare tell me he wasn't influenced by Hendrix.

Anyway I'm not trying to prove to you he's the best, because that's a personal opinion I respect, but just explaining why he is ONE of the best ever, simply because -even if you don't like his music- rock music wouldn't exist as we know it today if it weren't for him.

That's what defines a great musician for me, trascending the realms of your time.

Believe me I have Hendrix, I have a huge collection, 600gigs or so and he is there.

I think were agreeing but not seeing it. My only argument is when and it is often, that he is referred to as the best hands down. And there is no evidence to support it or I should say a lack of, and often based on feelings.

I agree- there's no way to tell who's the best, nor do I want to hold an ultimate truth. I was just curious as to why you don't like it. BTW which are your favourite guitarists? You did mention Gilmour, anyone else?

Here, I'll upload something that's quite rare but pretty funny by Jimi.

naw man I love Hendrix, my original comment was that he was a little over rated, that's it no biggie.

Oh well it depends on what aspect generically from Page, Clapton, Townsend, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, Rhoads....

Neoclassical rock, I tend to favour the shredders, and on the technical aspect.

But I love to rock I am a long hair head banger at heart, so then Young, Chuch Schuldiner, James Murphy, Alex Skolnick, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, C.C. DeVille, Mick Mars, Kerry King, Dave Mustaine,Daniel Spitz, Vivian Campbell

Oh man there are so so many....

He isn't over rated...

If you asked some of the guitar players who you have on your list...
they would probably tell you Hendrix was one of the best guitarists of his time.

You have to remember he didn't have the effect pedals and gizmos that they have today.

He was simply amazing!~
I still have my old Hendrix Albums to this day.
He was a staple in my diet of listening pleasure!~

I grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, CCR, The Eagles, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple...just to name a few.

side note..

I knew Jimi Hendrix's Dad...Al Hendrix.
We used to talk about his son alot...when we played golf on the golf course.
I told him I wanted Jimi to play Purple Haze when I'm walking through those pearly gates...after I die.
He used to get a kick out of me...and how much I loved his son's music.
Al died a few years ago.
I hope he remembers to tell Jimi to play my request.
RIP Al

The thing with Hendrix was that he could improvise extremely well as he was playing. Hed improv perfect little riffs, then straight solo for a bit all with an absurdly good grasp of rhythm and soul. Before him there were guitar players of equal technical ability, such as Joe Pass but Hendrix really opened the guitar wide open with his originality coupled with technical ability. Theres a reason why Zappa respected him so much.
