He did influence the other greats at that time as they him and would have challenged them all, but he does not have the body of work to support that. For every great solo by him there are a hundred better ones. His lack of work is his worse shortcoming. I dont think you can compare some one like David Gilmour with 40 years to his 3 as equal.
I was just telling you he has a lot of work to show, you just haven't heard it apparently. I could upload shit you couldn't even imagine was him, because he just couldn't possibly publish everything he composed.
And about Gilmour, there's NOTHING Gilmour invented, and I'm a sucker for his guitar playing... actually, hear Gilmour on "A saurceful of secrets" and then on the golden years of Pink Floyd (1969-1981) and dare tell me he wasn't influenced by Hendrix.
Anyway I'm not trying to prove to you he's the best, because that's a personal opinion I respect, but just explaining why he is ONE of the best ever, simply because -even if you don't like his music- rock music wouldn't exist as we know it today if it weren't for him.
That's what defines a great musician for me, trascending the realms of your time.

Believe me I have Hendrix, I have a huge collection, 600gigs or so and he is there.
I think were agreeing but not seeing it. My only argument is when and it is often, that he is referred to as the best hands down. And there is no evidence to support it or I should say a lack of, and often based on feelings.

I agree- there's no way to tell who's the best, nor do I want to hold an ultimate truth. I was just curious as to why you don't like it. BTW which are your favourite guitarists? You did mention Gilmour, anyone else?
Here, I'll upload something that's quite rare but pretty funny by Jimi.

naw man I love Hendrix, my original comment was that he was a little over rated, that's it no biggie.
Oh well it depends on what aspect generically from Page, Clapton, Townsend, Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, Rhoads....
Neoclassical rock, I tend to favour the shredders, and on the technical aspect.
But I love to rock I am a long hair head banger at heart, so then Young, Chuch Schuldiner, James Murphy, Alex Skolnick, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, C.C. DeVille, Mick Mars, Kerry King, Dave Mustaine,Daniel Spitz, Vivian Campbell
Oh man there are so so many....

If you asked some of the guitar players who you have on your list... they would probably tell you Hendrix was one of the best guitarists of his time.
You have to remember he didn't have the effect pedals and gizmos that they have today.
He was simply amazing!~ I still have my old Hendrix Albums to this day. He was a staple in my diet of listening pleasure!~
I grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, CCR, The Eagles, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple...just to name a few.
side note..
I knew Jimi Hendrix's Dad...Al Hendrix. We used to talk about his son alot...when we played golf on the golf course. I told him I wanted Jimi to play Purple Haze when I'm walking through those pearly gates...after I die. He used to get a kick out of me...and how much I loved his son's music. Al died a few years ago. I hope he remembers to tell Jimi to play my request. RIP Al

The thing with Hendrix was that he could improvise extremely well as he was playing. Hed improv perfect little riffs, then straight solo for a bit all with an absurdly good grasp of rhythm and soul. Before him there were guitar players of equal technical ability, such as Joe Pass but Hendrix really opened the guitar wide open with his originality coupled with technical ability. Theres a reason why Zappa respected him so much.
