when you say they are illegal, do you mean automatic machine guns?  If so, your mostly correct, as its really hard to get them, however, assault rifles are not hard to get at all.  i bought my sks when i was 19 years old, told the guy at the gun shop of my interest in it, filled out the paperwork, had it called into the approval system, left about 20 minutes after walking in with my new rifle.

Now that we know they cause far fewer deaths than handguns, what good comes from banning them?  What are we SOLVING by taking away the right to revolt.  Fact is, as i think you may have said earlier, we are screwed against the govt anyways, if people chose to uprise, there is no way we coudl fight against tanks, planes, missiles, fully armored humvee's with mounted 50 cal. machine guns, but taking away what we do have is NOT going to help this whatsoever. 

It is easy to arm yourself to the teeth if you have the money to do so, and you are NOT a criminal, as then you can legally own them.  Every gun i own was legally obtained, and every gun i ever will own will be.  Fact is if we make them illegal, ONLY criminals will have them (since those of us that already do may become criminals, depending on the wording of the law) and have access to them (since they will buy all their guns illegally anyways, since chances are they cannot own them according to the law), putting the law abiding citizen further in danger.

Any of you that really does think all guns should be taken away from civillians are not even american in my book. Im not joking. If you can't realize what guns represent in the hands of civillians, then maybe you should go read a few books or maybe look up some of the things our founding fathers had to say about it. Guns are what won our freedom, and guns are what keeps us free.

Someone said in this thread somewhere that; It's not like the governemnt is going to go door to door and take our guns away. Did you even pay attention when hurricane katrina happened? The government came in and took every gun away from everyone, even people just trying to protect themselves from looters. There were houses and areas that were completley fine and dry, but the governemnt went door to door taking their 2nd ammendment from them. These were white bread honest americans, not your version of and ideal gang members shooting up things. When the shit hits the fan, and there is no one to protect you but yourselves, your going to wish you had a gun, because you can't stand up to someone wanting to kill you with your hippy way of thinking.

Im going to work now. All you unamerican gun haters try to read up on what made this country free, and what we rights we need to stay free. Stop putting your freedom in the hands of someone else. Stop letting fear take away your rights.

But TBH what are you gonna do when the government comes at you with a swat team?

Does it really matter if you have a whole arsenal of machine guns. Your gonna get them taken away regardless and probably die in the process if you don't comply.

What is the advantage in a situation like that?

At the time the 2nd amendment was written, there was a clear distinction between "arms" and "artillery."  Most of the things you mention would fall under the latter category(though machine guns are kind of iffy).

My personal thoughts on this subject:  I think it's a dumb move, and it's one of the areas where I part ways with Obama.  But ultimately I think it's largely unimportant and inconsequential.  The Supreme Court has ruled that the right to bear arms is an individual right, but that regulation is still allowed under the 2nd amendment.  Shotguns, rifles, and probably handguns will still be legal for a long time to come.

I already told you this i should have been more specific.The argument of "but whut about nuclearz bobbms, you think I should be ables to have themz??" is on its face rediculous, acrimonious and hyperbolc tripe.. the meaning of arms was, is and has been clearly defined.

Support for this can be found in what types of arms the militiamen were expected to supply for themselves according the Militia Act of 1792. These arms were " muskets/firelocks/rifles, pistols, sabers, swords, and espontoons (a pike like device)." They were not required to supply themselves with artillery pieces like cannon or mortars. The arms of today would be direct lineal decendents of those arms, the supreme court confirmed this is the case last year in the Heller Vs DC decision. In today's world, automatic weapons and rifles would be right in line for what "arms" are included, their direct lineal descendants.
