Jars fully colonized! Please critique my next plans for them
    #6518016 -

Ok I have 8 fully colonized BRF jars ready to go! My plans are as follows. I intend on opening the jars and removing the dry verm layer and then filling the jars with distilled water and storing them in the fridge tonight. Tommorow I plan on casing them as suggested in this post: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1880227/page/4/fpart/1/vc/1

I plan on doing two in this manner and 2 by crumbling the cakes and casing afterwards. Then I plan on sticking them back into the incubator and waiting until the casing starts to show growth, patch them and stick them into my FC. As this is my first grow ever I would like your opinions on my plan and also I have a few direct questions. one, does the water used to rehydrate the cakes need to be boiled or anything first? Two, should I crumble the cakes like I intend or should I just do all 8 like the casing tek I posted the link to? Thanks in advance you guys have been a great source of knowledge and I wouldn't have made it this far without you!

I would make two casings of 4 cakes each, that way if you lose one you still have the other to fall back on,

would you crumble the cakes or would you case in the manner in the link I posted? I will be using coir/verm.

Either way is going to work. Just make sure theres a lot of casing contact with your substrate so you can saturate it with water via misting of the casing layer. Also try for an even casing depth, so you wont get only pins in the sides/center. You can always make little valleys and ridges so there will be areas where the myc will pop through and pin, and areas where you can mist. Good luck.

Go ahead and crumble a few of them. Get a feel for how a real casing is supposed to work on a smaller level like that.

I'd dunk in ziplock bags instead of the jar. If you use distilled water there's no need to boil. If your city water isn't bad you also probably don't need to boil.

You might want to consider a casing layer other than coir/verm. Lots of people have success with it, but coir doesn't make the best casing layer. At least use 70% verm 30% coir. Miracle Grow Moisture Control makes a great casing layer. Don't forget to pasteurize.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

If you decide to use a mix of coir/verm, you can easily add a long term buffer by doing the following: Save some eggshells, clean them as well as you can, then boil them for five minutes. This will make the membrane easy to peel off. Save the outer shell and, using a bowl or mason jar and a blunt wooden object, grind the shells to a fine consistency. Throw about a half to a teaspoon per pint of casing mix and you'll be pleased with the result. Thats what the + is at the end of 50/50+ Good luck

The answer is no. In fact, you don't need to use distilled water either. Tap water is all that is needed, ever.

What are the pros and cons of crumbling or casing the cakes whole?
