Epsom Salts as a dessicant?
    #999491 - 10/28/02 10:54 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Are Epsom Salts really an effective Dessicant?

This, of course, after fan drying for at least 12 hours. ( I live in a super dry climate.)

Anybody here prefer Epsom Salts to other dessicants like DryRid or Silica Gel.
If they work, they seem like the way to go since they are super inert and super cheap!

So what's the verdict?

after serious though about dessicants.... here are my conclusions...

epsom - magnesium sulfate - reuseable - turns to hard matter after drying and u need to break it up with hammer...
damp rid - calcium chloride - non reusable - turns to slimy liquid
silica - silica - reusable - retains moisture and oven dry
drierite - calcium sulfate - reuseable - can be found as gypsum but gypsum is powder (plaster of paris)... drierite brand is expensive...

even tho everyone ask's which one is better... ask youself this.. which one is easyer to handle and use... more convinient and more available....

but if you have epsom salts around.. just use that... dont need to buy things you dont need...

Evil Eye,

do NOT waste your time with those salts. Just go to the store, and buy a bag of crystals brand cat litter

it's 100% pure silica gel, and works perfectly. I've used it everytime. It has to be the crystals brand though, that comes in like clear bags, and every single crystal looks clear or blue. If it's got the clay sand in it, that wouldn't work.

After you use the stuff, you pop it into the oven at 300 for an hour, and it's ready to go again. 15$ for a big ass bag of it, can't beat it's price or effectiveness.

I think Epsom salts would be better than that cat litter.  You can dry it for 5 minutes in the microwave, and it's way cheaper.  The only hassle about epsom salts is that you have to break it up after drying, but that takes about a whole minute.  And it works just fine.

ya i use epsom salt to dry with...all you need to do is bake it until it gets harder (make sure you dont bake it too long or it will be a bitch to get out of whatever you cooked it in) and then break it up and put it in whatever your going to use to hold your dessicant and shrooms in and your set! also fan dry for about a day or so before you use your dessicant.

Use a "pyrex" or glass (ovenproof) baking dish. Epson salt pops right out of it, after baking. 6T

It's a lot easier and faster to just throw the Epsome Salts in the microwave though if you have one.

Sweet, thanks everybody.

I'm goin with the salts since they are dirt cheap and they are the only thing on the list of possible dessicants that actually has directions for ingesting them on the label (not to mention bathing in them)
No worries about silica dust or water soluble poisons or any of that mess.
